✧ Requirement of Intention for the Fasting Person from the Night in Obligatory Fasting but Not in Voluntary Fasting

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ؓ قَالَ: تَسَحَّرْتُ ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُفْطِرَ ؟ قَالَ: أَفْطِرْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: كَانَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ ؓ يَأْتِي أَهْلَهُ فَيَقُولُ: عِنْدَكُمْ شَيْءٌ ؟ فَإِذَا قَالُوا: لَا، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ

Translation

✧ I heard a man ask Anas b. Malik ؓ: I ate the pre-dawn meal, then it occurred to me to break my fast? He said: Break your fast. Then he said: Abu Talhah ؓ used to come to his family and say: Do you have anything? If they said no, he would say: Then I am fasting.
