✧ Fasting One Day and Breaking the Fast One Day

قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ بِشْرِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ؓ قَالَ:

إِنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: أَصُومُ الدَّهْرَ ؟ فَنَهَاهُ، وَعَاوَدَهُ فَنَهَاهُ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ: وَلَكِنْ صَوْمَ دَاوُدَ ; صُمْ يَوْمًا، وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمًا ; فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ صَوْمُ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ. فَمَا زَالَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا حَتَّى مَاتَ

Translation

✧ A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: 'Should I fast the whole time?' He forbade him, and he repeated it, and he forbade him, three times: 'But the fast of Dawud - fast one day and break the fast one day; for that is the fast of Dawud ﷺ.' And that man did not cease fasting one day and breaking the fast one day until he died.
