✧ When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, his daughter Zaynab set out from Makkah with Kinana — or the son of Kinana. Some people went after her and Habbār b. al-Aswad caught up with her. He kept thrusting at her camel with his spear until it threw her off, and she miscarried and bled. She became a source of contention between Banu Hashim and Banu Umayya. Banu Umayya said, 'We have more right to her,' because she was married to their cousin Abu al-ʿĀṣ. She was with Hind bt. ʿUtba b. Rabīʿa, and Hind would say to her, 'This is because of your father.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Zayd b. Ḥāritha, 'Will you go and bring Zaynab?' He said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Take my ring and give it to her.' Zayd went and kept being discreet until he met a shepherd and asked, 'For whom do you tend?' He replied, 'For Abu al-ʿĀṣ.' He asked, 'Whose sheep are these?' He replied, 'They belong to Zaynab bt. Muḥammad.' He walked with him a little, then said, 'Would you like me to give you something to give to her, and not mention it to anyone?' He said, 'Yes.' So he gave him the ring. The shepherd went and brought his sheep in and gave the ring to her. She recognized it and asked, 'Who gave you this?' He said, 'A man.' She said, 'Where did you leave him?' He said, 'At such-and-such a place.' She waited until nightfall, then went out to him. When she came to Zayd, he said to her, 'Ride in front of me on the camel.' She said, 'No, but you ride in front of me.' So he rode and she mounted behind him until they arrived. The Messenger of Allah used to say, 'She is the best of my daughters; she was afflicted because of me.' This reached ʿAlī b. Ḥusayn, who went to ʿUrwa and said, 'What is this report I heard that you narrate, diminishing Fāṭima's right?' ʿUrwa said, 'By Allah, I would not like to have all that is between the east and the west and to diminish any right that belongs to Fāṭima. ✧ I asked Aishah about the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: 'Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the rites of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah, there is no blame upon him to walk between them' (2:158). I said, 'By Allah, there is no blame on anyone not to walk between them.' She said, 'How bad is what you said, O son of my sister! If it were as you interpreted it, it would be: "there is no blame upon him not to walk between them." But it was only revealed because the Ansar, before they embraced Islam, used to consecrate themselves to the idol Manat, which they worshipped near the House. Whoever had walked around it would deem it sinful to walk between al-Safa and al-Marwah. When they embraced Islam, they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that, saying, "O Messenger of Allah, we deem it sinful to walk between al-Safa and al-Marwah." So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the rites of Allah. ✧ ‘O assembly of Muslims, who will excuse me from a man whose harmful talk about my family has reached me? By God, I have known nothing but good from my family, and they have mentioned a man of whom I have known nothing but good, and he would not visit my family except with me.’ Saʿd b. Muʿādh stood and said, ‘O Messenger of God, I will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, we will strike his neck; and if he is from our brothers the Khazraj, you will command us and we will carry out your command.’ She said: Then Saʿd b. ʿUbāda stood — and he was the chief of the Khazraj at that time, and before that he had been a righteous man, but zeal carried him away — and said, ‘You have lied, by the life of God! You will not kill him, by the life of God, and you are not able to kill him.’ Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr stood — and he was the cousin of Saʿd b. Muʿādh — and said to Saʿd b. ʿUbāda, ‘You have lied, by the life of God! We will surely kill him. You are but a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites.’ Then the two tribes, the Aws and the Khazraj, rose up against each other until they were about to fight, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was standing on the minbar. The Messenger of God ﷺ kept calming them until they settled — or fell silent. She said: I wept that entire day, my tears did not stop, and I could not sleep. My parents came to me in the morning, and I had wept through the night, unable to sleep, my tears not stopping, and they thought that weeping would split my liver. She said: While they were sitting with me and I was weeping, a woman of the Anṣār asked permission to enter upon me. I gave her permission, and she sat weeping with me. While we were in that state, the Messenger of God ﷺ entered, greeted, and sat down. She said: He had not sat with me since the time the talk had been said before that, and a month had passed without revelation coming to him. She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ pronounced the testimony of faith and then said, ‘Now then, O ʿĀʾisha, it has reached me about you such-and-such. If you are innocent, God will soon declare your innocence; but if you have fallen into a sin, ask God for forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant acknowledges his sin and then repents to God, God turns to him in forgiveness.’ She said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished his speech, my tears dried up, so that I did not feel a single drop of them. I said to my father, ‘Respond to the Messenger of God ﷺ about what he said.’ He said, ‘By God, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of God.’ I said to my mother, ‘Respond to the Messenger of God about what he said.’ She said, ‘I do not know what to answer the Messenger of God.’ I was a young girl who did not recite much of the Qur’an. I said, ‘By God, if I say that I am innocent — and God knows that I am innocent — you will not believe me in that; and if I confess to a sin — and God knows that I am innocent — you will believe me. By God, I find no example for myself and for you except the father of Yūsuf when he said: “So patience is most fitting, and God is the One sought for help against what you describe.”’ She said: Then I turned away and lay down on my bed. She said: At that time I knew that I was innocent, and that God, Blessed and Exalted, would declare my innocence because of my innocence. But by God, I did not think that God, Blessed and Exalted, would send down revelation concerning my affair that would be recited. My affair in my own estimation was too insignificant for God to speak about me in a matter that would be recited. But I hoped that the Messenger of God ﷺ would see a dream in which God would declare my innocence. She said: By God, the Messenger of God ﷺ had not left when revelation came to him, and he was seized with what would seize him of the intense discomfort, until beads of sweat like pearls would pour from him on a cold day, because of the weight of the speech that was coming down to him. When that state left him, he was relieved, and he was smiling. The first word he spoke was, ‘Indeed, God has sent down your innocence.’ My mother said, ‘Get up and go to the Messenger of God.’ I said, ‘By God, I will not get up to go to him, and I praise none but God.’ She said: Then God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: “Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you” — the ten verses, all of them. She said: When God sent down this concerning my innocence, Abū Bakr said — and he used to spend on Misṭaḥ because of his kinship to him and his poverty — ‘By God, I will not spend on Misṭaḥ after what he said about ʿĀʾisha.’ Then God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: “And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give to the near of kin…” up to His saying: “…that God may forgive you, and God is Forgiving, Merciful.” Abū Bakr said, ‘Yes, by God, I love that God should forgive me,’ and he resumed giving Misṭaḥ the allowance he used to give him, and said, ‘By God, I will never take it away from him.’ ʿĀʾisha said: The Messenger of God ﷺ had consulted Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh about my affair, and she said, ‘O Messenger of God, I guard my hearing and my sight. By God, I have known nothing but good.’ She said: God protected her through her piety, but as for her sister, she perished among those who perished. Al-Zuhrī said: This is what has reached us of the account of these people who narrated to me from ʿĀʾisha.

✧ Marriage in the pre-Islamic era was of four types. One of them was the marriage of people today: a man proposes to a man for a woman, gives her a dowry, then marries her. Another type: a man would say to his wife when she became pure from her menses, 'Send word to so-and-so,' and her husband would keep away from her and not touch her at all until her pregnancy from that man became clear; then when her pregnancy became clear, her husband would have intercourse with her. He did that only out of fear of [claiming] the child, and this was called 'marriage.' Another type: a group of men would gather and enter upon a woman, each of them having intercourse with her. When she became pregnant and gave birth, and some nights passed after she delivered, she would send for them, and none of them could refuse to come until they gathered at her place. She would say to them, 'You know what your affair was; I have given birth, and he is your son, or your daughter, O so-and-so,' naming whichever of them she wished by name, and the child would be attributed to that man, who could not refuse. The fourth type: many people would gather and enter upon a woman, and she would not refuse anyone who came to her — these were the prostitutes. They would set up flags at their doors, and whoever wanted them would enter upon them. When one of them became pregnant and gave birth, they would gather for her the physiognomists, then attach the child to the one they thought [was the father], without him being able to refuse. Then when God sent Muḥammad ﷺ with the truth, He abolished the marriages of the pre-Islamic era except the marriage of Islam.

Hassan said: 'I will pluck you from them as a hair is plucked from dough. ✧ I entered upon 'Umar b. 'Abd al-'Aziz while he was governor of Madinah, and with him were a group of his companions. Scholars from various regions had gathered with him, and they were asking about this verse: 'And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphans, then marry those that please you of women' until His saying: 'And give the women their dowers graciously.' 'Urwa said: 'A'isha ؓ narrated to me that it was revealed concerning orphan girls under the guardianship of men. An orphan girl would be in the care of a man, and she would be unattractive, but possess wealth. He would not marry her because of her unattractiveness, nor would he let her marry someone else, until she died and he would inherit from her. If he did marry her, he would keep her without being just to her in giving her due. So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: 'And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphans, then leave them and do not marry them. Marry those that please you of women, two, three, or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then one, or those your right hands possess. That is more suitable that you may not incline (to injustice),' meaning: so that you do not deviate. 'And give the women their dowers graciously'—an obligatory gift. Then after this verse was revealed: 'And they ask you concerning women. Say: Allah gives you a ruling about them and what is recited to you in the Book concerning orphan girls to whom you do not give what is prescribed for them, and you desire to marry them.' Thus this other verse lightened (the matter).

✧ I did not comprehend my parents except that they were following the religion, and not a day passed without the Messenger of God ﷺ coming to us at the two ends of the day, morning and evening. When the Muslims were tested, Abu Bakr set out as an emigrant toward Abyssinia until, when he reached al-Ghimad, Ibn al-Daghinah met him and said, “Where do you intend to go, O Abu Bakr?” Abu Bakr said, “My people have driven me out, so I intend to wander in the land and worship my Lord.” Ibn al-Daghinah said, “O Abu Bakr, someone like you does not go out. You provide for the destitute, maintain family ties, bear the burden of the weak, host the guest, and assist in the calamities of truth. So I am your protector; return and worship your Lord in your own land.” So he returned, and Ibn al-Daghinah traveled with him. Ibn al-Daghinah went around among the nobles of Quraysh in the evening and said to them, “Abu Bakr should not go out; a man like him does not go out, who provides for the destitute, maintains family ties, bears the burden of the weak, hosts the guest, and assists in the calamities of truth.” Quraysh did not reject the words of Ibn al-Daghinah and said, “Tell Abu Bakr to worship his Lord in his house and pray in it, and not harm us nor make it public, for we fear he will tempt our sons and women.” Zayd b. al-Daghinah said, “He will not make his prayer public nor recite outside his house.” Then he told Abu Bakr what they said and what they replied. So Abu Bakr took a mosque in the courtyard of his house and would recite the Qur'an, and the women and children of the polytheists would pass by him and look at him. He was a man who wept much and could not control his eyes when reciting the Qur'an. That alarmed the nobles of Quraysh among the polytheists, so they sent to Ibn al-Daghinah and said, “We sheltered Abu Bakr under your protection on condition that he worship his Lord in his house, but he has made prayer and recitation public, and we fear he will tempt our sons and women. He has violated—I think he said—what you had stipulated for him, that he worship his Lord in his house, so let him return your protection.” Aisha said: So Ibn al-Daghinah came to Abu Bakr and said, “You know what I pledged to you. Either you do that—or something similar—or you return my protection to me, for I hate that the Arabs should say that I betrayed a man to whom I had given protection.” Abu Bakr said, “I have returned your protection to you.” Abu Bakr prepared to emigrate and bought two riding camels, and he fed them leaves of the samur tree—that is, khabet—for four months. Ibn Shihab said: Urwah said: Aisha said: While we were sitting one day in Abu Bakr's house at noon, a man said to Abu Bakr, “This is the Messenger of God coming”—I think he said, and it was a time when he had not been coming to us—so Abu Bakr said, “By God, nothing has brought him at this hour except a matter.” She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ came and asked permission, and he was granted permission and entered. The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, “Send out those who are with you.” Abu Bakr said, “They are only your family, may my father be your ransom, O Messenger of God.” The Messenger of God said, “For I have been permitted to depart.” Abu Bakr said, “The companionship, may my father be your ransom, O Messenger of God?” The Messenger of God said, “Yes.” Abu Bakr said, “Then take, may my father be your ransom, O Messenger of God, one of my two riding camels.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “For its price.” Aisha said: So he took one of them, and we prepared them and made for them a provision in a leather bag. Asma’ cut one of her belts and tied with it the mouth of the bag, and from that she was called Dhat al-Nitaq. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ and Abu Bakr went to a cave called Thawr. Abdullah b. Abu Bakr, a young boy, would stay the night with them, then leave them at the end of the night and be with Quraysh in Makkah by morning. He would hear no matter without memorizing it, and would bring them that. Amir b. Fuhayrah would pasture for them a ewe given as a gift, and would bring it to them to rest when an hour of the night had passed. He did that every night of those three nights.
