✧ I asked Aishah about the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: 'Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the rites of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah, there is no blame upon him to walk between them' (2:158). I said, 'By Allah, there is no blame on anyone not to walk between them.' She said, 'How bad is what you said, O son of my sister! If it were as you interpreted it, it would be: "there is no blame upon him not to walk between them." But it was only revealed because the Ansar, before they embraced Islam, used to consecrate themselves to the idol Manat, which they worshipped near the House. Whoever had walked around it would deem it sinful to walk between al-Safa and al-Marwah. When they embraced Islam, they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that, saying, "O Messenger of Allah, we deem it sinful to walk between al-Safa and al-Marwah." So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the rites of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah, there is no blame upon him to walk between them." Aishah said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ established the sunnah of walking between them, so it is not appropriate for anyone to abandon walking between them."
