✧ Umar came upon him in the market while he was bargaining for a woolen cloak, and said, “What is this, O Amr?” He said, “A cloak I am buying to give as charity.” Umar said to him, “Then you are you, indeed.” Then he came upon him later and said, “O Amr, what happened with the cloak?” He said, “I gave it as charity.” He said, “To whom?” He said, “To a thin woman he had married…” He said, “Did you not claim that you would give it as charity?” He said, “Yes, but I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say, ‘Whatever you give them is charity for you.’” He said: Umar said, “O Amr, do not lie about the Messenger of God ﷺ!” He said, “By God, I will not leave you until you come to the Mother of the Believers, Aisha.” He said, “O Amr, do not lie about the Messenger of God!” So they asked permission to see Aisha, and Amr said, “I adjure you by God, did you hear the Messenger of God ﷺ say, ‘Whatever you give them is charity for you’?” She said, “O God, yes. O God, yes.” Umar said, “Where was I from this? The striking of deals in the markets distracted me.”
