✧ I used to, when I heard a hadith from the Messenger of God ﷺ, benefit from it as much as God willed. But if someone else narrated to me, I would not believe him unless he swore an oath. So when he swore, I believed him. Abu Bakr narrated to me—and Abu Bakr spoke truthfully—saying: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'There is no Muslim who commits a sin, then performs wudu, prays two rak'ahs, and seeks God's forgiveness, except that He forgives him.'

✧ Umar sent for me after the day had advanced, and he granted me permission. I entered upon him while he was on a bed of palm fibers, leaning his back against its ropes, reclining on a leather cushion. He said to me: 'O Malik, a group of your people has arrived, and I have ordered some wealth for them. Take it and distribute it among them.' I said to him: 'O Commander of the Believers, I have no strength for that. If only you would order someone else.' He said: 'Take it and distribute it among them.' He said: Then Yarfa' came to him and said: 'O Commander of the Believers, will you receive Uthman b. Affan, Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, al-Zubayr, and Sa'd?' He said: 'Yes.' So he granted them permission and they entered. Then he came to him again and said: 'O Commander of the Believers, will you receive Ali and al-Abbas?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: Then they entered, and al-Abbas was saying: 'O Commander of the Believers, judge between me and this man.' Sufyan said: And he mentioned some harsh words. The people said: 'O Commander of the Believers, judge between them, and give each of them relief from the other.' Umar said to them: 'I adjure you by God, by whose permission the heavens and the earth stand: do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: We are not inherited from; what we leave behind is charity?' They said: 'Yes.' Umar said: 'God singled out His Messenger ﷺ with a special privilege that He did not single out for anyone else.' Then he recited the verse: 'And what God restored to His Messenger from them—you did not spur any horse or camel for it' (Quran 59:6). Sufyan said: I do not know whether he recited the verse after it or not. He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ distributed among you the wealth of Banu al-Nadir. By God, he did not prefer himself over you, nor did he keep it from you. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to take from it his own yearly expenditure and that of his family, and he would make what remained into horses and weapons as equipment in the way of God.' Then he said to them: 'I adjure you by the One by whose permission the heaven and the earth stand: do you know that?' They said: 'Yes.' Then he adjured Ali and al-Abbas by what he had adjured the people: 'Do you two know that?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'When the Messenger of God ﷺ passed away, Abu Bakr was the heir of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Then you, O Abbas, came seeking your inheritance from your nephew, and Ali came seeking the inheritance of his wife from her father. Abu Bakr said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: We are not inherited from; what we leave behind is charity. Yet you considered me—and God knows that he was dutiful and rightly guided—a withholder of the truth. When Abu Bakr passed away, I said: I am the heir of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the heir of Abu Bakr. Yet you considered me—and God knows that I am truthful, dutiful, rightly guided, and a follower of the truth. Then you two came to me with your case being one, and you asked me to hand it over to you. I said: If you wish, I will hand it over to you on condition that you have a covenant with God to do with it what the Messenger of God ﷺ used to do with it. So you took it on that basis.' Then he said to them: 'Is that so?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then you two came to me for me to judge between you. By God, I will not judge between you other than that until the Hour comes. If you are unable, then return it to me.'

✧ Umar looked in on Abu Bakr while he was sticking out his tongue. He said: 'What are you doing, O successor of the Messenger of God?' He said: 'This has brought me to ruin. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: There is no part of the body except that it complains of the sharpness of the tongue.'

While I was sitting in the shade of a fortress tower, Umar b. al-Khattab passed by me and greeted me, but I did not sense that he passed or greeted. Umar went until he entered upon Abu Bakr and said: Should I not amaze you? I passed by Uthman and greeted him, but he did not return the greeting to me. Then Abu Bakr and Umar came—during Abu Bakr's caliphate—until they reached me and both greeted. Then Abu Bakr said: Your brother Umar came to me and claimed that he passed by you and greeted, but you did not return the greeting to him. What led you to that?' I said: 'I did not do that.' Umar said: 'Yes, but it is your pride, O Banu Umayya.' Uthman said: I said: 'By God, I did not sense that you passed or greeted.' He said: Abu Bakr said: 'Uthman has spoken truthfully. Has some matter distracted you from that?' He said: I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'What is it?' Uthman said: I said: 'God took His Prophet ﷺ before I could ask him about the salvation of this matter.' Abu Bakr said: 'I did ask him about that.' Uthman said: I said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, you are more entitled to it.' Abu Bakr said: 'I said: O Messenger of God, what is the salvation of this matter?' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Whoever accepts from me the word that I offered to my uncle and he rejected it—it is salvation for him.'

While they were doing so, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached, so they all rose against him. The cry came to Abu Bakr, and it was said: "Help your companion." He went out from us, having four braids, saying: "Woe to you! Would you kill a man for saying: My Lord is Allah, when he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord?" ✧ What will happen of the affairs of this world and the Hereafter was shown to me. The first and the last were gathered on one plain, and the people were terrified. They went to Adam, while sweat almost bridled them, and said: 'O Adam, you are the father of mankind, and Allah chose you; intercede for us with your Lord.' He said: 'I have faced the like of what you faced. Go to your father after your father, to Noah, for Allah chose Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran over all worlds.' So they went to Noah and said: 'Intercede for us with your Lord. Allah chose you and answered your supplication, and you did not leave on earth any of the disbelievers.' He said: 'That is not with me. Go to Moses, for Allah spoke to him directly.' Moses said: 'That is not with me, but go to Jesus, for he used to heal the blind and the leper and raise the dead.' Jesus said: 'That is not with me, but go to the master of the children of Adam, for he is the first from whom the earth will split on the Day of Resurrection. Go to Muhammad, and he will intercede for you with your Lord.' So he goes, and Gabriel is called. Gabriel comes to his Lord, and Allah says: 'Give him permission and give him the good news of Paradise.' Gabriel takes him, and he falls prostrate for a week. Then Allah says: 'O Muhammad, raise your head; speak and you will be heard, intercede and you will be granted intercession.' He raises his head, and when he looks at his Lord he falls prostrate for another week. Allah says: 'O Muhammad, raise your head; speak and you will be heard, intercede and you will be granted intercession.' He falls prostrate again, and Gabriel takes him by his upper arms. Allah opens for him from supplication something He never opened for any human. He says: 'O Lord, You made me master of the children of Adam, and no boast; and the first from whom the earth will split on the Day of Resurrection, and no boast, until the cistern will come to me, larger than the distance between San'a and Eilat.' Then it is said: 'Call the truthful ones,' and they intercede. Then it is said: 'Call the prophets.' A prophet ﷺ comes with a band, a prophet with five or six, and a prophet with no one. Then it is said: 'Call the martyrs,' and they intercede for whom they wish. When the martyrs finish, the Blessed and Exalted says: 'I am the Most Merciful of the merciful. Admit into My Paradise whoever did not associate anything with Me.' They enter Paradise. Then Allah says: 'Look into the Fire: is there anyone who ever did any good?' They find a man in the Fire, and he is asked: 'Did you ever do any good?' He says: 'No, except that I used to be lenient in selling.' Allah says: 'Be lenient to My servant as he was lenient to My servants.' He is brought out of the Fire. And another man, and Allah says: 'Did you ever do any good?' He says: 'No, except that I commanded my children: when I die, burn me, then grind me until I become like kohl, then take me to the sea and scatter me in the wind.' Allah says: 'Why did you do that?' He says: 'From fear of You.' He says: 'Look at the kingdom of the greatest king, for you will have its like and ten times its like.' He says: 'Do You mock me while You are the King?' That is the one at whom I laughed in the forenoon.

✧ Abu Bakr sent for me after the killing of the people of al-Yamama, and I came, and there was Umar with him. Then he mentioned something similar to the hadith of al-Umari, and added in it after the statement of Zayd b. Thabit: "so I attached it," he said: Ibn Shihab said: On that day they differed regarding "al-tabut," so Zayd said: "al-tabuh," and the Qurayshi group said: "al-tabut," so they referred their difference to Uthman, and he said: Write it as "al-tabut," in the dialect of Quraysh. Ibn Shihab said: And Ibn Mas'ud had disliked that Zayd was appointed to copy the codices. Ibn Shihab said: And Ubayd Allah b. Abd Allah narrated to me that Abd Allah said: O assembly of Muslims, am I to be removed from the Book of God and a man appointed to it, by God, I became Muslim while he was in the loins of a disbelieving man? meaning Zayd b. Thabit. He said: For that reason Abd Allah said: O people of Iraq - or: O people of Kufa - hide the codices that you have and conceal them, for God says: And whoever withholds [something], will come with what he withheld on the Day of Resurrection. Ibn Shihab said: It reached me that men among the virtuous companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ disliked this statement of his.

✧ Beware of the milking animal—or: beware of those with milk. He took a sheep, slaughtered it and skinned it, and told his wife to cook and bake. He kept cutting meat into the pot and lit a fire under it until the meat and bread were done and he made tharid. Then he ladled broth and meat over it and brought it to us and placed it before us, and we ate until we were full. Then he went to the water skin, which the wind had cooled, and it became cold. He poured into the vessel, then handed it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he drank. Then he handed it to Abu Bakr, and he drank. Then he handed it to Umar, and he drank. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Praise be to God. We went out, and nothing drove us out except hunger, and we returned having obtained this. You will surely be asked about this on the Day of Resurrection; this is part of bliss. Then he said to the Waqifi: Do you not have a servant to give you water? He said: No, O Messenger of God. He said: When captives come to us, come to us so that we may order a servant for you. It was only a short while before captives came to him. The Waqifi came to him and he said: What brings you? He said: O Messenger of God, your promise that you made to me. He said: Here are captives, so stand and choose from among them. He said: You be the one to choose for me. He said: Take this boy and treat him well. He took him and went with him to his wife. She said: What is this? He related the story to her. She said: What did you say to him? He said: I said to him: You be the one to choose for me. She said: You did well. He told you to treat him well, so treat him well. He said: What is treating him well? She said: That you free him. We described him by his appearance, but he did not recognize him. While we were mentioning him, the man appeared. We said: Here he is. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: I adjure you by Allah, did you say when you stood by the gathering: There is no one among the people better or more virtuous than I? He said: O Allah, yes. Then he entered to pray. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who will kill the man? Abu Bakr said: I will. He entered upon him and found him standing in prayer. He said: Glory be to Allah, should I kill a man who is praying when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has prohibited killing those who pray? He came out. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What did you do? He said: I disliked killing him while he was praying, and you have prohibited killing those who pray. Umar said: I will. He entered and found him prostrating with his face on the ground. Umar said: Abu Bakr is better than me. He came out. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What happened? He said: I found him prostrating, and I disliked killing him. He said: Who will kill the man? Ali said: I will. He said: You, if you catch him. Ali entered and found that he had left. He returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: What happened? He said: I found that he had left. ✧ Abu Bakr sent for me after the killing of the people of al-Yamama, and Umar b. al-Khattab was with him. Abu Bakr said: Umar came to me and said: The killing was intense on the day of al-Yamama among the reciters of the Quran, and I fear that killing will intensify among the reciters of the Quran in other places, and much of the Quran will be lost. I think you should order that it be collected. I said: How can I do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do? Umar said: By Allah, it is good. He kept arguing with me about it until Allah opened my chest to it, and I saw in it what Umar saw. Zayd b. Thabit said: Abu Bakr said: You are a young, intelligent man, and we do not suspect you. You used to write down the revelation for the Prophet ﷺ. So track down the Quran and collect it. Zayd said: By Allah, if he had tasked me with moving a mountain, it would not have been heavier on me than what he ordered me to do in collecting the Quran. I said: How can you do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do? He said: By Allah, it is good. He kept arguing with me until Allah opened my chest to what He had opened the chests of Abu Bakr and Umar to, and I saw in it what they saw. So I tracked down the Quran, collecting it from parchments, flat stones, palm stalks, and the hearts of men, until I missed the end of Surat al-Tawba. I found it with Khuzayma b. Thabit al-Ansari: 'There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; he is concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful' up to the end of Bara'a. The sheets remained with Abu Bakr during his life until Allah took him, then with Umar until Allah took him, then with Hafsa.

✧ Hudhayfa b. al-Yaman came to Uthman b. Affan. He had been campaigning with the people of Syria in the conquest of Armenia and Azerbaijan alongside the people of Iraq. Their differences in recitation alarmed Hudhayfa. Hudhayfa said to Uthman: O Commander of the Faithful, catch this community before they differ about the Book as the Jews and Christians differed. Uthman sent to Hafsa: Send us the sheets so we can copy them into the codices and then return them to you. Hafsa sent them to Uthman. Uthman ordered Zayd b. Thabit, Abdullah b. al-Zubayr, Sa'id b. al-As, and Abd al-Rahman b. al-Harith b. Hisham to copy them into the codices. He said to the three Qurayshi men: If you and Zayd b. Thabit differ about anything in the Quran, write it in the language of Quraysh, for it was revealed in their language. They did so. When the sheets had been copied, Uthman returned the sheets to Hafsa and sent to every region a codex of what they had copied, and ordered that everything else containing the Quran, whether a page or a codex, be erased or burned.

✧ Abu Bakr bought a mount from Abu for thirteen dirhams. He said: Tell al-Bara' to carry it to my mount. He said: No, not until you tell me how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left Makkah for Madinah. He said: We set out and we were delayed our day and our night until it became noon - or he said: the midday stood - then I cast my eyes and saw a rock that had a remnant of shade, so I sprinkled it and spread a fur for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in it. I said: Sleep, O Messenger of Allah. Then I went about inspecting what was around me, to see if I could see anyone from the pursuit. Then I saw a shepherd of sheep wanting from the rock the same as I wanted. I said: Who are you, O boy? He said: For a man of Quraysh. I recognized him. I said: Is there any milk in your sheep? He said: Yes. I said: Will you milk for us? He said: Yes. So I ordered him, and he restrained a ewe from the sheep, then I ordered him, and he shook its udder, then I ordered him, and he shook his hands from the dust, then he milked a small amount of milk for me. I had a water skin with a cloth over its mouth, so I poured water over the milk. Then I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I found him awake. I said: Drink, O Messenger of Allah. Then we set out, and no one from the pursuit caught up with us except Suraqah b. Malik b. Ju'shum on a horse of his. I said: This is the pursuit catching us, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us. When he drew near, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated against him, and his horse sank into the ground up to its belly. He jumped off it and said: O Muhammad, I know that this is your doing. Supplicate to Allah to deliver me from what I am in, and I will conceal your whereabouts from those behind me. This is my quiver, so take an arrow from it. You will pass by my camels and my servants at such-and-such a place, so take from them what you need. He said: I have no need of your camels. Then we arrived in Madinah at night. They disputed as to which of them the Messenger of Allah would stay with. He said: I will stay with the Banu al-Najjar, the maternal uncles of Abd al-Muttalib, honoring them by that. Then the men and women climbed above the houses, and the boys and servants spread out in the roads calling: O Muhammad, O Messenger of Allah, O Muhammad, O Messenger of Allah.

✧ These are the obligatory alms that Allah enjoined upon His Messenger. Whoever among the Muslims is asked for them in their proper manner should give them, and whoever is asked for more should not give it: For fewer than twenty-five camels, for every five a ewe; when they reach twenty-five, a one-year-old she-camel is due up to thirty-five; if there is no one-year-old she-camel, then a male two-year-old camel; when they reach thirty-six, a two-year-old she-camel is due up to forty-five; when they reach forty-six, a three-year-old she-camel that has been covered by the stallion is due up to sixty; when they reach sixty-one, a four-year-old she-camel is due up to seventy-five; when they reach seventy-six, two two-year-old she-camels are due up to ninety; when they reach ninety-one, two three-year-old she-camels that have been covered by the stallion are due up to one hundred and twenty; when they exceed one hundred and twenty, for every forty a two-year-old she-camel, and for every fifty a three-year-old she-camel. If the ages of camels differ in the obligatory alms, then whoever owes a four-year-old she-camel but does not have one and has a three-year-old she-camel, it may be accepted from him, and he adds two ewes if they are easy for him, or twenty dirhams. Whoever owes a three-year-old she-camel but has only a four-year-old she-camel, it may be accepted from him, and the collector gives him twenty dirhams or two ewes. Whoever owes a three-year-old she-camel but does not have one and has a two-year-old she-camel, it may be accepted from him, and he adds two ewes if they are easy for him, or twenty dirhams. Whoever owes a two-year-old she-camel but has only a three-year-old she-camel, it may be accepted from him, and the collector gives him twenty dirhams or two ewes. Whoever owes a two-year-old she-camel but does not have one and has a one-year-old she-camel, it may be accepted from him, and he adds two ewes if they are easy for him, or twenty dirhams. Whoever owes a one-year-old she-camel but has only a male two-year-old camel, it may be accepted from him without anything added. Whoever has only four camels, nothing is due unless their owner wishes. On zakat of sheep in their grazing herds, when they are forty, one ewe is due up to one hundred and twenty; when they exceed that, two ewes up to two hundred; when they exceed that, three ewes up to three hundred; when they exceed that by one, for every hundred one ewe. In zakat, no old ewe, no defective animal, and no male goat is to be taken unless the collector wishes. Herds should not be combined, and combined herds should not be separated out of fear of zakat. Whatever belongs to two partners, they settle between themselves equally. If a man's grazing herd is one ewe short of forty, nothing is due unless its owner wishes. On silver, one quarter of one tenth is due; if the wealth is only one hundred and ninety dirhams, nothing is due unless its owner wishes.

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab passed by Uthman while he was sitting in the mosque and greeted him, but he did not return the greeting. He entered upon Abu Bakr and complained about that to him, saying: I passed by Uthman and greeted him, but he did not return my greeting. He said: Where is he? He said: He is sitting in the mosque. He said: So we went to him, and Abu Bakr said to him: What prevented you from returning your brother's greeting when he greeted you? He said: By Allah, I did not realize that he greeted me. He passed by me while I was talking to myself, and I did not notice his greeting. Abu Bakr said: What were you talking to yourself about? He said: Satan withdrew with me and began casting into my mind things that I would not love to have spoken even if I had all that is on earth. When Satan cast that into my mind, I said to myself: Would that I had asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what saves us from this whispering that Satan casts into our minds. Abu Bakr said: By Allah, I complained of that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him: What saves us from this whispering that Satan casts into our minds? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It saves you to say the like of what I commanded my uncle at death, but he did not do it.
