✧ Uqbah b. Amir came to Mu'awiyah while he was in Ilya, and he did not stay long before he left, so he was sought and not found - or he said: we sought him and did not find him - so we followed him, and there he was praying in an open area of land. He said: What brought you? They said: We came to renew our covenant with you, or to fulfill your right. He said: I have your gift. We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey, and each man among us had the task of tending the camels for a day, and it was my day to tend them. He said: I brought the camels back in the evening and came to the Prophet ﷺ, and his companions had gathered around him while he was speaking. He said: I let the camels go and headed toward him, and I reached him while he was saying: Whoever performs ablution and does it well, then prays two units seeking thereby the face of God, God will forgive him what was before them. I said: God is greatest. He said: A man struck my shoulder, so I turned, and there was Abu Bakr. He said: O Ibn Amir, what was before it is better. I said: What was before it? He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Whoever bears witness that there is no god but God, his heart confirming his tongue, will enter from any of the gates of Paradise he wishes.
