✧ When Hafsa became a widow—she had been married to Khunays b. Hudhafa—ʿUmar went to Abu Bakr and offered her to him, but he remained silent. Then he went to ʿUthman and offered her to him, and ʿUthman said: I have no need of women. But then the Messenger of God ﷺ proposed to her, and she was married to him. ʿUmar met Abu Bakr and said: I offered Hafsa to you and you remained silent, and I was more angry with you than with ʿUthman, who refused me. Abu Bakr said: There had been mention of her matter, but it was a secret, and I disliked disclosing the secret.
