✧ We were with Umar b. al-Khattab in Madinah. We sighted the new moon. I was a man of sharp sight, and I saw it while no one else claimed to have seen it. I kept saying to Umar: 'Do you not see it?' but he could not see it. Umar said: 'I will see it while lying on my bed.' Then he began to tell us about the people of Badr, saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ showed us the places where the people of Badr would fall the day before, saying: 'This is where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, if Allah wills.' Umar said: By the One who sent him with the truth, they did not miss the spots that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had marked. They were thrown into a well, one on top of another. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went until he reached them and said: 'O so-and-so son of so-and-so, and O so-and-so son of so-and-so, have you found what Allah and His Messenger promised you to be true? For I have found what Allah promised me to be true.' Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, do you speak to bodies without souls?' He said: 'You are not more able to hear what I say than they are, except that they cannot reply to me.'

He said: He neither fasted nor broke his fast—or: He did not fast and did not break his fast, Ghaylan was unsure. When Umar saw the Prophet's ﷺ anger, he said: O Messenger of Allah, fasting two days and breaking fast one day? He said: Can anyone endure that? I said: O Messenger of Allah, fasting one day and breaking fast one day? He said: That is the fast of my brother Dawud. He said: O Messenger of Allah, fasting one day and breaking fast two days? He said: Who can endure that? He said: O Messenger of Allah, fasting on Mondays? He said: That is the day I was born and the day prophethood was sent down to me. He said: O Messenger of Allah, fasting the day of Arafah and the day of Ashura. He said: One of them expiates and the other said: what is before it, or what is after it, Abu Hilal was unsure.

He said: I said as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Any Muslim for whom four people testify to good, Allah will admit him to Paradise. We said: And three? He said: And three. We said: And two? He said: And two. Then we did not ask him about one.

You asked the Messenger of God ﷺ three times, and every time he did not answer you.' So I spurred my camel and went ahead of the people. No sooner had I done so than I heard a caller crying out, so I went back. I said: 'I feared that something of the Qur'an had been revealed concerning me.' I greeted him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'A surah was revealed to me tonight that is dearer to me than all that the sun rises upon.' Then he recited: 'Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory, that God may forgive you your past and future sins.'

✧ O son of al-Khattab, are you not content that for us is the Hereafter and for them is this world? I said: 'Yes.' He said: And I entered upon him when I entered, and I saw anger in his face. I said: 'O Messenger of God, what distresses you concerning the matter of the women? If you have divorced them, then God is with you, and His angels, and Jibril and Mika'il, and I and Abu Bakr and the believers are with you.' And rarely have I spoken—and praise be to God—any words except that I hoped God would confirm the saying I uttered. He said: And this verse was revealed, the verse of choice: 'It may be that his Lord, if he divorces you, will give him in exchange wives better than you, and if you two support one another against him, then indeed God is his protector, and Jibril, and the righteous of the believers, and the angels after that are his supporters.' And 'A'isha daughter of Abu Bakr and Hafsa were supporting one another against the rest of the Prophet's ﷺ wives. I said: 'O Messenger of God, have you divorced them?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, I entered the mosque and the Muslims were scratching with pebbles, saying: The Messenger of God ﷺ has divorced his wives. So come down and inform them that you have not divorced them.' He said: 'Yes, if you wish.' And I kept speaking to him until the anger left his face and until he smiled and laughed, and he had the finest front teeth of anyone. Then the Prophet of God ﷺ came down, and I came down clinging to the palm trunk. The Messenger of God ﷺ descended as if walking on the ground without touching it with his hand. I said to him: 'O Messenger of God, you were in the upper room only twenty-nine days?' He said: 'The month may be twenty-nine.' Then I stood at the door of the mosque and called out at the top of my voice: 'He has not divorced his wives.' He said: And this verse was revealed: 'And when there comes to them a matter of security or fear, they spread it abroad. But if they had referred it to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, those who can derive it from them would know it.' And I was the one who derived that matter, and God revealed the verse of choice.

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab delivered a Friday sermon. He mentioned the Prophet of Allah and mentioned Abu Bakr, then said: 'I saw as if a rooster pecked me once or twice, and I see that only as portending the approach of my appointed time. Some people are telling me to appoint a successor, but Allah would not neglect His religion, His caliphate, or that with which He sent His Prophet ﷺ. I know that some people will criticize this matter; I struck them with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam. If they do so, they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. If death comes to me soon, the caliphate is a matter of consultation among these individuals with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he passed away. I will not leave behind anything more important to me than kalala. I never went back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about anything as much as I did about kalala, and he never spoke harshly to me about anything as he did about it, until he poked his finger into my chest and said to me: "O Umar, is the verse of summer at the end of Surah al-Nisa' not enough for you?" If I live, I will issue a ruling on it by which those who recite the Qur'an and those who do not recite the Qur'an will judge.' Then he said: 'O Allah, I call You to witness over the governors of the garrison cities, for I sent them only to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, to be just with them, to distribute their booty among them, and to refer to me whatever of their affairs is unclear to them. Then you, O people, eat of two plants that I consider only impure: this onion and garlic. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he detected their odor on a man in the mosque, order him to be taken out to al-Baqi'. So whoever eats them should kill their odor by cooking.'

Then Umar b. al-Khattab came, and he said: O Ibn al-Khattab, what brought you out? He said: The One who brought you both out, O Messenger of God. Umar sat down, and the Messenger of God ﷺ turned to talk with them. Then he said: Do you have strength to go to this palm grove and get food, drink, and shade? We said: Yes. He said: Take us to Ibn al-Tayyihan, Abu al-Haytham al-Ansari. The Messenger of God ﷺ went ahead of us and greeted, and asked permission three times. Umm al-Haytham was behind the door listening to the speech and wished the Messenger of God ﷺ would give her more. When the Messenger of God ﷺ was about to leave, Umm al-Haytham came out running after them and said: O Messenger of God, by God I heard your greeting, but I wished that you would increase us in your greetings. The Messenger of God ﷺ said something good to her and said: Where is Abu al-Haytham? I do not see him. She said: He is nearby; he has gone to fetch fresh water for us. Come in; he will come this hour, God willing. She spread a mat for them under a tree. Abu al-Haytham came and was delighted with them, and his eye was cooled by them. He climbed a palm tree and cut a bunch of dates for them. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Enough for you, O Abu al-Haytham. He said: O Messenger of God, you may eat from its unripe dates, its ripe dates, and its hanging clusters. Then he brought them water, and they drank. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: This is part of the delight about which you will be asked. Abu al-Haytham got up to slaughter a sheep for them, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: Beware of milch animals. Umm al-Haytham got up to knead dough for them and bake. The Messenger of God ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar laid their heads down for the midday nap. They woke up and their food was ready. The food was placed before them, and they ate and were satisfied and praised God, Mighty and Majestic. Umm al-Haytham returned to them the remainder of the date clusters, and they ate from its ripe dates and hanging clusters. The Messenger of God ﷺ greeted them and supplicated for them.

✧ The martyrs are four: A believing man of excellent faith who met the enemy and was true to God until he was killed—that is the one to whom people will raise their eyes on the Day of Resurrection, like this, and he raised his head until his cap fell; I do not know whether it was Umar's cap or the Prophet's ﷺ. And a believing man of excellent faith, such that when he met the enemy it was as if his skin was being struck with the thorns of the talh tree out of cowardice; a stray arrow came to him and killed him, and he is in the second rank. And a believing man who mixed a good deed with an evil one, met the enemy and was true to God until he was killed—that one is in the third rank. And a believing man who was immoderate against himself, met the enemy and was true to God until he was killed—that one is in the fourth rank.

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab delivered a sermon and said: I saw in a dream as if a red rooster pecked me once or twice, and I see that only as the approach of my term. If my affair hastens, then the caliphate is a consultation among these six persons with whom the Messenger of God ﷺ was pleased when he passed away. I know that people will criticize this matter; I fought them with this hand of mine for Islam. If they do so, they are the enemies of God, the disbelievers, the misguided. I bear witness concerning the governors of the regions: I sent them only to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet ﷺ and to distribute their spoils. The Messenger of God ﷺ did not speak harshly to me about anything, or: I did not dispute with the Messenger of God ﷺ about anything regarding the verse of al-kalala, until he struck my chest and said: The verse of summer, which was sent down at the end of Surah al-Nisa, suffices you: 'They ask you for a ruling. Say: God gives you a ruling concerning al-kalala.' No ruling was decided in it that is known to those who read and those who do not read; it is what excludes the father — so I think. Indeed, O people, you eat from two plants that I consider nothing but foul: onion and garlic. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to order that a man from whom their smell is detected be taken out to al-Baqi'. Whoever must eat them should kill their odor by cooking.
