✧ When Hafsa became a widow after Ibn Hudhafa. Umar said: 'I met Uthman and offered him Hafsa. He said: I will consider my matter. I waited for some nights, then he met me and said: It has become clear to me that I should not marry on this day of mine.' Umar said: 'Then I met Abu Bakr and said: I will marry you to Hafsa. He did not return anything to me, and I was more upset with him than with Uthman. I waited for some nights, then the Messenger of God ﷺ proposed to her, and I married her to him. Then Abu Bakr met me and said: Perhaps you were upset with me when you offered Hafsa?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Nothing prevented me from returning to you except that I already knew that the Messenger of God ﷺ had mentioned her, and I would not disclose the secret of the Messenger of God ﷺ. If he had left her, I would have accepted her.' Umar said: 'Then I complained about Uthman to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: Hafsa will marry someone better than Uthman, and Uthman will marry someone better than Hafsa. Then the Prophet ﷺ married his daughter to him.'
