✧ When 'Perish the hands of Abu Lahab' was revealed, the one-eyed Umm Jamil came with a wail and a stone in her hand, saying: 'Mudhammam we have rejected – or: we have come, the doubt is from Abu Musa – and his religion we have despised, and his command we have disobeyed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting, and Abu Bakr was beside him – or he said: with him. Abu Bakr said: 'This one has approached, and I fear she may see you.' He said: 'She will not see me,' and he recited a Qur'an with which he sought protection: 'And when you recite the Qur'an, We put between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a hidden barrier.' He said: 'She came and stood over Abu Bakr and did not see the Prophet ﷺ. She said: "O Abu Bakr, I have heard that your companion has satirized me." Abu Bakr said: "No, by the Lord of this House, he has not satirized you." She left saying: "Quraysh know that I am the daughter of their chief."'
