حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْرَائِيلَ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ السَّبَّاقِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ:

أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مَقْتَلَ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ فَجِئْتُ فَإِذَا عُمَرُ عِنْدَهُ، فَذَكَرَ نَحْوًا مِنْ حَدِيثِ الْعُمَرِيِّ، وَزَادَ فِيهِ بَعْدَ قَوْلِ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ: " فَأَلْحَقْتُهَا " قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: فَاخْتَلَفُوا يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي " التَّابُوتِ " فَقَالَ زَيْدٌ: " التَّابُوهُ " وَقَالَ الرَّهْطُ الْقُرَشِيُّونَ: " التَّابُوتُ "، فَرَفَعُوا اخْتِلَافَهُمْ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ فَقَالَ: اكْتُبُوهُ فِي " التَّابُوتِ "، بِلِسَانِ قُرَيْشٍ. قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: وَكَانَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قَدْ كَرِهَ أَنْ وُلِّيَ زَيْدٌ نَسْخَ الْمَصَاحِفِ. قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: وَحَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ قَالَ: يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أُعْزَلُ عَنْ كِتَابِ اللهِ وَيُوَلَّاهَا رَجُلٌ، وَاللهِ لَقَدْ أَسْلَمْتُ وَإِنَّهُ لَفِي صُلْبِ رَجُلٍ كَافِرٍ ؟ يُرِيدُ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ، قَالَ: فَلِذَلِكَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: يَا أَهْلَ الْعِرَاقِ - أَوْ: يَا أَهْلَ الْكُوفَةِ - غُلُّوا الْمَصَاحِفَ الَّتِي عِنْدَكُمْ وَاكْتُمُوهَا، فَإِنَّ اللهَ يَقُولُ: وَمَنْ يَغْلُلْ يَأْتِ بِمَا غَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ. قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: فَبَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ هَذَا مِنْ مَقَالَتِهِ رِجَالٌ كَانُوا مِنْ أَفَاضِلِ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

✧ Abu Bakr sent for me after the killing of the people of al-Yamama, and I came, and there was Umar with him. Then he mentioned something similar to the hadith of al-Umari, and added in it after the statement of Zayd b. Thabit: "so I attached it," he said: Ibn Shihab said: On that day they differed regarding "al-tabut," so Zayd said: "al-tabuh," and the Qurayshi group said: "al-tabut," so they referred their difference to Uthman, and he said: Write it as "al-tabut," in the dialect of Quraysh. Ibn Shihab said: And Ibn Mas'ud had disliked that Zayd was appointed to copy the codices. Ibn Shihab said: And Ubayd Allah b. Abd Allah narrated to me that Abd Allah said: O assembly of Muslims, am I to be removed from the Book of God and a man appointed to it, by God, I became Muslim while he was in the loins of a disbelieving man? meaning Zayd b. Thabit. He said: For that reason Abd Allah said: O people of Iraq - or: O people of Kufa - hide the codices that you have and conceal them, for God says: And whoever withholds [something], will come with what he withheld on the Day of Resurrection. Ibn Shihab said: It reached me that men among the virtuous companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ disliked this statement of his.
