✧ Abu Bakr sent for me after the killing of the people of al-Yamama, and there was Umar b. al-Khattab with him. He said: Umar came to me and said: The killing has intensified among the reciters of the Qur'an on the day of al-Yamama, and I fear that killing will intensify among the reciters in all the battlefields, and much of the Qur'an will be lost. I think you should command that it be collected. Abu Bakr said: I said to Umar: How can I do something the Messenger of God ﷺ did not do? Umar said: It is, by God, good. Umar kept coming back to me until God expanded my chest for what He had expanded Umar's chest for, and I saw in it what he saw. Zayd said: Abu Bakr said: You are a young, intelligent man, and we do not suspect you; you used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of God ﷺ, so pursue the Qur'an and collect it. He said: By God, if they had tasked me with moving a mountain among the mountains, it would not have been heavier upon me than that. He said: I said: How can you do something the Messenger of God ﷺ did not do? Abu Bakr said: It is, by God, good. Abu Bakr and Umar kept coming back to me until God expanded my chest for what He had expanded the chests of Abu Bakr and Umar for. So I pursued the Qur'an, collecting it from parchments, palm stalks, stones, and thin stones, and from the hearts of men, and I found at the end of Surat al-Tawbah (Bara'ah) with Khuzaymah b. Thabit: There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves, to the end of the verse.
