✧ When Hafsa bt. Umar became a widow after Khunays b. Hudhafa al-Sahmi, who was one of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Umar said: 'I went to Uthman b. Affan and offered him Hafsa bt. Umar.' He said: 'I said: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa.' He said: 'I will consider my matter.' I waited for some nights, then he met me and said: 'It has become clear to me that I should not marry on this day of mine.' Umar said: 'Then I met Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and said to him: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa bt. Umar. Abu Bakr remained silent and did not return anything to me, and I was more upset with him than with Uthman. I waited for some days, then the Messenger of God ﷺ proposed to her, and I married her to him. Then Abu Bakr met me and said: Perhaps you were upset with me when you offered me Hafsa and I did not return anything to you?' He said: 'I said: Yes.' He said: 'Nothing prevented me from returning to you regarding what you offered me except that I had already known that the Messenger of God ﷺ had mentioned her, and I would not disclose the secret of the Messenger of God ﷺ. If the Messenger of God ﷺ had left her, I would have accepted her.'
