✧ Qays b. ʿĀṣim came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I buried alive eight daughters of mine in the Jāhiliyyah. He said: "Free a slave for each one of them." I said: I am a camel owner. He said: "Then offer a camel for each one of them, if you wish."

✧ He asked the Prophet ﷺ about oaths of alliance. He said: "Whatever oath of alliance existed in the Jāhiliyyah, hold fast to it, but there is no oath of alliance in Islam."

✧ “My sons, fear Allah and make your eldest your leader, for when a people make their eldest their leader they succeed their father, but when they make their youngest their leader he is disparaged among your peers. You must acquire wealth, for it is a means of honor for the generous and by it one is made independent of the vile. Beware of begging from people, for it is the last of a man’s earnings. When I die, do not wail over me, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not wailed over. When I die, bury me in a land where Bakr b. Wa’il will not know of my burial, for I used to raid them in the Jahiliyyah.”

✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when he saw me I heard him say, “This is the chief of the Arabs.” When we dismounted, I went to him and began to speak with him. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, what wealth is there upon which I will bear no blame, from a guest who seeks my hospitality and from dependents who have become numerous?” He said, “Excellent wealth is forty, and the most is sixty. Woe to the owners of two hundred, except the one who gives from its milk and its strength, lends its back for riding, and slaughters its fat ones and feeds the contented and the beggar.” I said, “O Prophet of Allah, how noble and beautiful are these qualities! O Messenger of Allah, no valley in which I am can accommodate the abundance of my camels.” He said, “How do you manage?” I said, “The camels go out in the morning and the people go out, and whoever wishes takes hold of a camel’s head and goes off with it.” He said, “What do you do about lending the backs for riding?” I said, “I do not lend out the young nor the old toothless one that has turned away.” He said, “Is your wealth dearer to you or the wealth of your clients?” I said, “My own wealth is dearer to me than the wealth of my clients.” He said, “You shall have from your wealth what you ate and consumed, or wore and wore out, or gave away and sent forth; otherwise it is gathered against you.” I said, “By Allah, if I remain alive I will certainly exhaust its number.” Al-Hasan said, “By Allah, he did so. When death came to Qays, he said, ‘O my sons, take from me, for I find no one more sincere to you than myself. When I die, make your elders your leaders and do not make your young ones your leaders, lest people deem you foolish and then hold you in contempt. You must set right your wealth, for it is a means of honor for the generous and by it one is made independent of the vile. Beware of begging, for it is the last of a man’s earnings; no one begs except that he abandons his earning. When I die, do not wail over me, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding wailing. Shroud me in the clothes in which I used to pray and fast. When you bury me, do not bury me in a place where anyone can see me, for there were scratches between me and Bakr b. Wa’il in the Jahiliyyah, and I fear that they will exhume me and then do something by which your religion and your worldly life would be lost.’” Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “He advised them in life and advised them in death.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was born in the Year of the Elephant, and between the Fijar and the Elephant were twenty years. He said: They named it the Fijar because they acted wickedly and made lawful things they had forbidden. Between the Fijar and the building of the Kaaba were fifteen years, and between the building of the Kaaba and the sending of the Prophet ﷺ were five years. So our Prophet ﷺ was sent when he was forty years old.

✧ When the Prophet of God ﷺ sat, a group of his companions would sit with him. Among them was a man who had a small son who would come to him from behind his back and sit in front of him, until the boy died. The man then refrained from attending the circle, remembering God and grieving over him. The Prophet ﷺ missed him and said, “Why do I not see so-and-so?” They said, “O Messenger of God, his young son whom you saw has died, and that has kept him from attending the circle.” The Prophet ﷺ met him and asked about him, and was told that he had died. He consoled him, then said, “O so-and-so, which would you prefer: to enjoy him for your entire life, or that tomorrow you will not come to any gate of the gates of Paradise except that you find him already there ahead of you, opening it for you?” He said, “O Prophet of God, that he precedes me to the gates of Paradise and opens them for me is dearer to me.” He said, “That is yours.” A man from the Ansar stood up and said, “O Messenger of God, may God make me your ransom, is this for so-and-so specifically, or for every Muslim whose child has died as a forerunner?” He said, “Rather, for every Muslim whose child has died as a forerunner, that will be his.”

When morning came, the shepherd came running, saying, “Good news! Good news! ✧ A bow was given to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he handed it to me on the day of Uhud. I shot with it in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until it broke at its string notch. I remained at my post in front of the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, facing the arrows with my face. Whenever an arrow headed toward the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I tilted my head to shield the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ without shooting any arrow myself. The last of them was an arrow from which my eyeball protruded onto my cheek. The ranks dispersed, and I took my eyeball in my hand and hastened with it in my hand to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw it in my hand, his eyes shed tears, and he said: "O Allah, Qatādah has shielded the face of Your Prophet with his face, so make it the best of his two eyes and the sharpest in sight." So it became the best of his two eyes and the sharpest in sight.
