✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to ask him about a liability. He said: “Stay until the zakāh comes to us, and either we will give you or we will assume it on your behalf.” Then he said about it: “Begging is not lawful except for three: a man who incurs a liability between people and asks for it until he pays it off, then refrains; and a man afflicted by need until three men of sound judgment among his people testify that he has been afflicted by what makes it lawful — or he said: begging becomes lawful for him — so it is lawful until he obtains a means of livelihood or a sufficiency of livelihood, then he refrains. Other than that, begging is unlawful gain, O Qabīṣah; its eater consumes unlawful gain.” The wording is from the hadith of Ibn ʿUlayyah.
