حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ نَائِلَةَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ ثَنَا النُّعْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ حَسَّانٍ ثَنَا شَقِيقُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنِي قَيْسُ بْنُ أَبِي غَرَزَةَ قَالَ
كُنَّا نَتَبَايَعُ فِي السُّوقِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَنُسَمِّي أَنْفُسَنَا السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَجَاءَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَمَّانَا بِأَحْسَنَ اسْمٍ مِمَّا كُنَّا نُسَمِّي بِهِ أَنْفُسَنَا فَقَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْحَلِفُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ» يَعْنِي فَشُوبُوهُ اخْلِطُوهُ

✧ We used to trade in the market in Madinah and call ourselves brokers (al-samāsirah). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and called us by a better name than what we had called ourselves, and he said, “O company of merchants, indeed this selling is attended by idle talk and swearing, so mix it with some charity”—meaning mix it, combine it.
