✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me, so I went out to him and found him suffering from a fever, having bandaged his head. He said: "Take my hand, O Faḍl." So I took his hand until he reached the pulpit and sat on it. Then he said: "Call out among the people." So I called out among the people, and a group of people gathered to him. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "O people, indeed rights have drawn near to me from among your midst. Whoever I have lashed his back, here is my back, let him take retribution from it. Indeed, whoever I have insulted his honor, here is my honor, let him take retribution from it. Indeed, let no man say, 'I fear ill will from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Indeed, ill will is not of my nature nor of my concern. Indeed, the most beloved of you to me is the one who takes a right if he has one against me, or who absolves me, so that I meet Allah with a sound soul. Indeed, I do not see that as sufficient for me until I stand among you repeatedly." Then he descended and prayed the noon prayer, then returned to the pulpit and repeated his speech about ill will and other matters. Then he said: "O people, whoever has anything with him, let him return it, and let him not say 'the disgraces of this world.' Indeed, the disgraces of this world are easier than the disgraces of the Hereafter." A man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have three dirhams owed by you." He said: "Indeed, we do not call a claimant a liar, nor do we make him swear. How did they come to be owed by me to you?" He said: "Do you remember the day a poor man passed by you, and you ordered me to give them to him?" He said: "Give them to him, O Faḍl." Then another man stood up to him and said: "I have three dirhams that I pilfered in the cause of Allah." He said: "Why did you pilfer them?" He said: "I was in need of them." He said: "Take them, O Faḍl." Then he said: "O people, whoever fears something within himself, let him stand, and I will pray for him." A man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am indeed a liar, and I am indeed a hypocrite, and I am indeed prone to sleeping." He said: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and remove sleep from him when he desires." Then another man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am indeed a liar, and I am indeed a hypocrite, and there is nothing of things except that I have committed it." ʿUmar said to him: "O this one, you have exposed yourself." He said: "Enough, O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, the disgraces of this world are easier than the disgraces of the Hereafter." Then he said: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and turn his affair to good." Then ʿUmar spoke a word to them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "ʿUmar is with me, and I am with him, and the truth after me is with ʿUmar wherever he is."

✧ We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ in the mosque when his gaze fixed upon a man walking in the mosque. He said, “O so-and-so.” He replied, “At your service, O Messenger of God.” He did not dispute the speech except to say, “O Messenger of God.” The Prophet ﷺ said to him, “Do you testify that I am the Messenger of God?” He said, “No.” He said, “Do you read the Torah?” He said, “Yes, and the Gospel.” He said, “And the Qur’an?” He said, “By the One in whose hand is my soul, if I wished I could read it.” Then he adjured him, “Do you find me in the Torah and the Gospel?” He said, “I find you, your like, your appearance, and your emergence. We had hoped that it would be from among us, but when you came forth, we were confused as to whether you are he. Then we looked and saw that you are not he.” He said, “And why is that?” He said, “Because with him from his community are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment, whereas with you there are only a few.” He said, “By the One in whose hand is my soul, I am he, and they are indeed my community, and they are more than seventy thousand, and seventy thousand.”

✧ We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when his gaze fell upon a man. He called the man, and a Jewish man wearing a shirt, trousers, and sandals approached. The man began saying, "O Messenger of Allah," and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded, "Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?" The man refused to respond, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not say anything except, "O Messenger of Allah" to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Do you read the Torah?" He replied, "Yes." He then asked, "And the Gospel?" He replied, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "And the Furqan?" He replied, "Yes," while adding, "And I swear by the Lord of Muhammad, if I wished, I could recite it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then asked, "I ask you by the One who revealed the Torah and the Gospel, have you found me mentioned in them?" He replied, "Yes, we find a description like yours coming out from your homeland. We used to hope that you would be among us. Then when you came out, we realized that you were the one. But when we looked again, we realized that you were not the one. So he asked, "Where am I from?" He replied, "We find among his nation seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without being held to account, and indeed you are only a few." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached and said the Takbeer twice and then said, "By the One whom my soul is in His Hand, I am indeed the one, and my nation is more than seventy thousand and seventy thousand."

✧ We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when revelation came down upon him. When revelation came down upon him, his gaze would melt while his eyes were open, and he would devote his hearing and sight and heart to what came from Allah. When it finished, he said to a scribe: Write: {Not equal are those believers who sit [at home] and those who strive in the cause of Allah} — the verse. Then the blind man stood up and said: What is our sin? Revelation came down upon him, so we said to the blind man: Revelation is descending upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He remained standing, saying: I repent to Allah. When it finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Write: {other than those who have a disability}.

✧ We came to the Prophet ﷺ among those Bedouins who came to him, and we sat waiting for him. He came out with anger on his face, and sat for a long time without speaking. Then he said: "I came out to you when the Night of Decree and the Messiah of Misguidance had become clear to me, and I came out to explain them to you and give you glad tidings about them. But at the entrance of the mosque I met two men arguing, with Satan between them, so I came between them and forgot it, and it was snatched away from me. I shall give you a hint of it."
