✧ “O my sons, when I die, make your eldest your leader so that you may succeed your fathers, and do not make your youngest your leader, for that would disparage you among your allies. Do not appoint a wailing woman over me, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding wailing. You must set right your wealth, for it is a means of honor for the generous and by it one is made independent of the vile. Do not give away the necks of the camels except to those entitled to them, and do not withhold them from what is due to them. Beware of every root of evil; whatever pleases you one day, what displeases you is more. Beware of the sons of your enemies, for they are enemies to you on the path of their fathers. When I die, bury me in a place where this clan of Bakr b. Wa’il cannot see me, for there were scratches between me and them in the Jahiliyyah, and I fear that they will exhume me and thereby corrupt their worldly life and corrupt your hereafter.’ Then he called for his quiver and ordered his eldest son, whose name was ‘Ali, saying, ‘Take out an arrow from my quiver.’ He took it out, and he said, ‘Break it,’ so he broke it. Then he said, ‘Take out two arrows,’ and he took them out, and he said, ‘Break them,’ so he broke them. Then he said, ‘Take out three arrows,’ and he took them out, and he said, ‘Break them,’ so he broke them. Then he said, ‘Take out thirty arrows,’ and he took them out, and he said, ‘Bind them with a bowstring,’ so he bound them. Then he said, ‘Break them,’ but he could not break them. He said, ‘O my sons, thus are you in unity, and thus are you in division.’ Then he began to recite poetry.”
