✧ I incurred a liability, so I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to ask him about it. He said: “Stay, O Qabīṣah, until the zakāh comes, then we will give you from it.” Then he said: “O Qabīṣah, begging is not lawful except for one of three: a man who incurs a liability, so begging becomes lawful for him until he obtains it, then he refrains; and a man afflicted by poverty until three men of sound judgment among his people say, ‘So-and-so has been afflicted by poverty,’ so begging becomes lawful for him until he obtains a means of livelihood — or he said: a sufficiency of livelihood. Other than these, begging is unlawful gain, O Qabīṣah; its eater consumes unlawful gain.”
