✧ It was a night of intense darkness and rain. I thought, if only I could take advantage of this night by attending ʿIshāʾ with the Prophet ﷺ. So I did. When the Prophet ﷺ finished, he saw me, and he had a palm branch on which he leaned while walking. He said, "What brings you here at this hour, O Qatādah?" I said, "I took the opportunity to attend the prayer with you, O Messenger of Allah." He gave me the palm branch and said, "Indeed, Satan has taken your place with your family. Go with this palm branch, take hold of it until you reach your house, then take it from behind the house and strike him with the palm branch." I left the mosque, and the palm branch lit up like a candle with light. I used it for light and came to my family, and I found them asleep. I looked in the corner, and there was a hedgehog in it. I kept striking it with the palm branch until it went out.
