✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when he saw me I heard him say, “This is the chief of the Arabs.” When we dismounted, I went to him and began to speak with him. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, what wealth is there upon which I will bear no blame, from a guest who seeks my hospitality and from dependents who have become numerous?” He said, “Excellent wealth is forty, and the most is sixty. Woe to the owners of two hundred, except the one who gives from its milk and its strength, lends its back for riding, and slaughters its fat ones and feeds the contented and the beggar.” I said, “O Prophet of Allah, how noble and beautiful are these qualities! O Messenger of Allah, no valley in which I am can accommodate the abundance of my camels.” He said, “How do you manage?” I said, “The camels go out in the morning and the people go out, and whoever wishes takes hold of a camel’s head and goes off with it.” He said, “What do you do about lending the backs for riding?” I said, “I do not lend out the young nor the old toothless one that has turned away.” He said, “Is your wealth dearer to you or the wealth of your clients?” I said, “My own wealth is dearer to me than the wealth of my clients.” He said, “You shall have from your wealth what you ate and consumed, or wore and wore out, or gave away and sent forth; otherwise it is gathered against you.” I said, “By Allah, if I remain alive I will certainly exhaust its number.” Al-Hasan said, “By Allah, he did so. When death came to Qays, he said, ‘O my sons, take from me, for I find no one more sincere to you than myself. When I die, make your elders your leaders and do not make your young ones your leaders, lest people deem you foolish and then hold you in contempt. You must set right your wealth, for it is a means of honor for the generous and by it one is made independent of the vile. Beware of begging, for it is the last of a man’s earnings; no one begs except that he abandons his earning. When I die, do not wail over me, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding wailing. Shroud me in the clothes in which I used to pray and fast. When you bury me, do not bury me in a place where anyone can see me, for there were scratches between me and Bakr b. Wa’il in the Jahiliyyah, and I fear that they will exhume me and then do something by which your religion and your worldly life would be lost.’” Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “He advised them in life and advised them in death.”
