✧ Kinānah: I said to him, “You are the chief of your people, and they came to you asking, but you did not give them anything.” He said, “As for this, I will not give anything. If he were bitten by a strap until it dried him out, it would be better for him than asking people in such a case. I will tell you about that. I undertook a guarantee of payment for my people, so I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, ‘O Messenger of God, I have undertaken a guarantee of payment for my people, and I have come to you so that you may help me with it.’ He said, ‘Rather we will carry it on your behalf, O Qabīṣah, and pay it to them from zakāt.’ Then he said, ‘O Qabīṣah, begging is forbidden except in one of three cases: a man who is struck by a calamity that destroys his wealth, so he asks until he obtains a means of livelihood, then he refrains; a man who is struck by need until three men of sound judgment from his people testify that begging has become lawful for him, so he asks until he obtains a means of livelihood, then he refrains; and a man who undertakes a guarantee of payment, so he asks until he reaches the amount, then he refrains. Anything other than that is illicit gain, which he consumes as illicit gain.’”
