✧ We were with Salim b. Ubayd on a journey, and a man sneezed and said, "Peace be upon you." He said, "Peace be upon you and upon your mother." Then he was asked, and he said, "Perhaps you found something objectionable in that." He said, "I do not like that you mention my mother." Salim said, "We were with the Prophet ﷺ, and a man sneezed and said, "Peace be upon you." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Peace be upon you and upon your mother." Then he said, "When one of you sneezes, let him say, 'Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds,' or 'Praise be to Allah in every situation,' and let it be said to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' and let him say, 'May Allah forgive me and you.'"

✧ We were with Salim b. Ubayd on a journey, and he mentioned the hadith in full, similar to the hadith of al-Thawri. "It was narrated by Jarir b. Abd al-Hamid from Mansur based on a misunderstanding, as he omitted the unknown man of al-Nakha'i between Hilal b. Yasaf and Salim b. Ubayd."

✧ Salim: "Peace be upon you and upon your mother." Then he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'When one of you sneezes, let him praise Allah, and let those with him say, "May Allah have mercy on you," and let him reply to them, "May Allah forgive us and you."'" The error in this narration of Jarir is apparent, for Hilal b. Yasaf did not meet Salim b. Ubayd nor see him, and between them is an unknown man. As for the wording that some jurists, who do not distinguish between sound and weak reports, have adopted regarding the Prophet's ﷺ instruction to the sneezer to say to the one who responds, "May Allah guide you and set your affairs right," it leads one to suppose that this response is for the People of the Book rather than Muslims.

✧ The Jews used to sneeze in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ hoping that he would say to them, "May Allah have mercy on you," and he used to say to them, "May Allah guide you and set your affairs right."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Ali, ask Allah for guidance and right direction, and remember by guidance your guidance on the path, and by right direction your aiming of the arrow." Then the Prophet ﷺ commanded his son al-Hasan b. Ali, the master of the youth of Paradise, the like of what he commanded his father. The hadith of Yazid b. Abi Maryam, from Abu al-Jawza', from al-Hasan b. Ali regarding the supplication of qunut which the Prophet ﷺ taught: "O Allah, guide me among those You have guided," is too well-known for its chain and routes to be mentioned. We have returned to the sound reports on etiquette that the two imams did not include. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.

I said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, because of what I see of the change in your color, the emaciation of your body, and the scattering of your hair.' He said, 'O Ibn Ka'b, how would it be if you saw me after three days in my grave, when the ants have extracted my eyeballs and they have flowed down my cheeks, and my nostrils and mouth have gushed with pus? You would be even more disapproving of me. Leave that; repeat to me the hadith of Ibn Abbas from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' I said, 'Ibn Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Everything has an honor, and the most honorable gathering is that which faces the qiblah. You sit together in trust. Kill the snake and the scorpion even if you are in prayer. Do not plaster your walls. None of you should look into his brother's book except with his permission. And none of you should pray behind a sleeping person or one who is ritually impure."' The hadith is invalid.

It was said, 'A man would be called and they would say, 'Muh, muh, muh,' indicating that he gets angry at this nickname.' He said, 'What then, may my father and mother be your ransom—returning good to people is better than that?' He said, 'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed to his mouth and said, 'Silence except from good.'' He said, 'Will we be held accountable for what our tongues utter?' He said, 'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck Muʿādh's thigh and said, 'O Muʿādh, may your mother be bereaved of you—or whatever Allah willed to say to him of that—will people be thrown on their faces into Hell for anything other than what their tongues have uttered? ✧ Two men sat with the Prophet ﷺ, one of whom was nobler than the other. The noble one sneezed but did not praise Allah, so the Prophet ﷺ did not invoke mercy on him. Then the other sneezed and praised Allah, so the Prophet ﷺ invoked mercy on him. The noble one said, “I sneezed and you did not invoke mercy on me, but this one sneezed and you invoked mercy on him.” He said, “You forgot Allah, so I forgot you; this one remembered Allah, so I remembered him.” Its chain is authentic but they did not include it. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in Al-Talkhis.

✧ I witnessed Abu Musa while he was in the house of Umm al-Fadl. She sneezed, so I invoked mercy on her, and I sneezed, but he did not invoke mercy on me. When I came to my mother and told her, when Abu Musa came to her, she said to him, “My son sneezed in your presence and you did not invoke mercy on him, while a woman sneezed and you invoked mercy on her.” He said, “Your son sneezed and did not praise Allah, so I did not invoke mercy on him, but she sneezed and praised Allah, so I invoked mercy on her. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘When one of you sneezes and praises Allah, invoke mercy on him; but if he does not praise Allah, do not invoke mercy on him.’” She said, “You have done well, you have done well.”
