✧ From ʿAmr b. Mālik al-Janbī, from Faḍālah b. ʿUbayd, from ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day upon his riding camel, with his companions before him. Muʿādh b. Jabal said, 'O Prophet of Allah, do you permit me to come up to you with a cheerful soul?' He said, 'Yes.' So Muʿādh drew near to him, and they rode together. Muʿādh said, 'May my father be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah! If only our day could be before your day—tell me, if something happens, and we see nothing, God willing—what deeds should we perform after you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell silent, then said, 'Jihad in the path of Allah.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'What an excellent thing jihad is, but there is something people have more control over than that: fasting and charity.' He said, 'What an excellent thing fasting and charity are.' Then Muʿādh mentioned every good deed that a son of Adam performs, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Returning good to people is better than that.' He said, 'What then, may my father and mother be your ransom—returning good to people is better than that?' He said, 'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed to his mouth and said, 'Silence except from good.'' He said, 'Will we be held accountable for what our tongues utter?' He said, 'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck Muʿādh's thigh and said, 'O Muʿādh, may your mother be bereaved of you—or whatever Allah willed to say to him of that—will people be thrown on their faces into Hell for anything other than what their tongues have uttered? So whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent about evil. Speak good and you will gain; remain silent from evil and you will be safe.'
