✧ I met Umar b. Abd al-Aziz in Madinah in his youth, his beauty, and his freshness. He said, "When he became caliph, I came to him and sought permission to enter, and he permitted me. I began to stare at him, and he said to me, 'O Ibn Ka'b, why do I see you staring?' I said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, because of what I see of the change in your color, the emaciation of your body, and the scattering of your hair.' He said, 'O Ibn Ka'b, how would it be if you saw me after three days in my grave, when the ants have extracted my eyeballs and they have flowed down my cheeks, and my nostrils and mouth have gushed with pus? You would be even more disapproving of me. Leave that; repeat to me the hadith of Ibn Abbas from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' I said, 'Ibn Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Everything has an honor, and the most honorable gathering is that which faces the qiblah. You sit together in trust. Kill the snake and the scorpion even if you are in prayer. Do not plaster your walls. None of you should look into his brother's book except with his permission. And none of you should pray behind a sleeping person or one who is ritually impure."' The hadith is invalid.
