حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عِيسَى ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ نَجْدَةَ الْقُرَشِيُّ ثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حُمْرَانَ ثَنَا خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ بْنِ أُسَامَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

كُنْتُ رَدِيفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَعَثَرَ بَعِيرُنَا فَقُلْتُ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ لِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَا تَقُلْ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْتَعْظِمُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِثْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيَقْوَى وَلَكِنْ قُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا قُلْتَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَصَاغَرَ حَتَّى يَصِيرَ مِثْلَ الذُّبَابِ

✧ I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when our camel stumbled, and I said: "May Satan perish." The Prophet ﷺ said to me: "Do not say 'May Satan perish,' for he becomes haughty until he is like a house and grows strong. But say 'In the name of Allah,' for when you say 'In the name of Allah,' he shrinks until he becomes like a fly."
