37. Repentence and Turning Toward Allah

  1. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7601Sahih

✧ Quraysh said to the Prophet ﷺ, “Supplicate for us that He make al-Safa gold for us, and we will believe in you.” He said, “Will you do that?” They said, “Yes.” So he supplicated, and Jibril ﷺ came to him and said, “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sends you greetings of peace and says: If you wish, al-Safa will become gold by morning; then whoever disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment with which I do not punish anyone in the worlds. And if you wish, I will open for them the door of repentance and mercy.” He said, “Rather, the door of repentance and mercy.”

  2. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7602Sahih

✧ “Among a person’s happiness is that his life is long, and Allah grants him the ability to turn back to Him.”

  3. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7603Sahih

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: 'I am as My servant thinks of Me, so let him think of Me as he wishes.'

  4. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7604Sahih

✧ Indeed, having good expectations of Allah, the Exalted, is part of the worship of Allah.

  5. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7605Sahih

✧ A good deed is multiplied ten times or I increase it, and an evil deed is one or I forgive it. And if you meet Me with the earth's fill of sins but without associating any partner with Me, I will meet you with its fill of forgiveness.

✧ From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, from Allah, Blessed and Exalted, that He said: 'O My servants, you are those who err by night and day, and I am the One who forgives sins and do not care, so ask forgiveness from Me and I will forgive you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except those whom I have fed, so ask food from Me and I will feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except those whom I have clothed, so ask clothing from Me and I will clothe you. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were all as pious as the most pious heart of any man among you, that would not increase My dominion in anything. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were all as wicked as the most wicked heart of any man among you, that would not decrease My dominion in anything. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, all stood on a single plain and asked of Me, and I gave every person among them what he asked, that would not decrease My dominion in anything, except as the sea decreases when a needle is dipped into it once. O My servants, it is only your deeds that I keep account of for you; so whoever finds good, let him praise Allah, the Exalted, and whoever finds other than that, let him blame none but himself.'

  7. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7607Sahih

✧ Abu Dharr al-Ghifari urinated while standing up, and his urine splashed onto his legs and feet. A man said to him, "The urine has touched your legs and feet." He did not respond to him until he arrived at the home of a group of people. They offered him water for purification, so he performed ablution and washed his legs and feet. Then he approached the man and asked, "What did you say?" The man replied, "By now, you have already done it." Abu Dharr said, "This is the cure and the remedy for sins, to seek forgiveness from Allah, the Almighty."

  8. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7608Sahih

✧ A servant committed a sin, then said: 'My Lord, I have committed a sin, so forgive me.' His Lord said: 'My servant knows that he has a Lord who forgives the sin and punishes for it,' so He forgave him. Then he remained as long as Allah willed, then committed another sin and said: 'My Lord, I have committed a sin, so forgive it for me.' His Lord, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'My servant knows that he has a Lord who forgives the sin and punishes for it. I have forgiven My servant, so let him do as he wills.' Then he returned and committed a sin and said: 'My Lord, forgive me my sin.' Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: 'My servant committed a sin and knew that he has a Lord who forgives the sin and punishes for the sin. Do as you will, for I have forgiven you.'

✧ Whoever commits a sin and knows that he has a Lord who, if He wills, will forgive him, and if He wills, will punish him, it is incumbent upon Allah to forgive him.

  10. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7610Sahih

✧ A man travels through a desolate land, and he says while under a tree, with his riding beast upon which is his provision and food. He wakes up and his riding beast has escaped. He climbs a high place and sees nothing, then climbs another high place and sees nothing. He turns and suddenly it is there, dragging its halter. He is not more joyful at it than Allah is at the repentance of His servant when he repents to Him.

  11. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7611Sahih

✧ He said: 'How would you describe the joy of a man whose riding beast has escaped, dragging its reins in a barren land with no food or drink, while his food and drink are on it? He sought it until it became difficult for him, then it passed by the base of a tree and its reins got caught, and he found it hanging there.' We said: 'Severe, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Indeed, by Allah, Allah is more joyful at the repentance of His servant than that man at his riding beast.'

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "I never desired anything that the people of ignorance desired except on two occasions, and Allah, the Exalted, protected me from both of them. One night, a young man from the Quraysh tribe and I were pasturing sheep on the highest point of Makkah. I asked him to watch over my flock until I darken my skin with the sun for this night in Makkah, just like young boys darken. He agreed, so I left. When I reached a house near the outskirts of Makkah, I heard singing, the sound of tambourines and flutes. I asked, "What is this?" They said, "Fulana married Fulan, a man from the Quraysh, and they hired musicians for their wedding." I became entranced by the singing and the music until my eyes became heavy with sleep, and I slept. The sun woke me up, so I returned. Again, I heard the same thing. Someone said to me what I heard before, and I became entranced by it again until my eyes became heavy with sleep, and I slept. The sun woke me up again, and I returned to my companion. He asked me, "What did you do?" I replied, "I did not do anything." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'By Allah, I never desired evil after that incident. Allah honored me with Prophethood.'"

✧ The Prophet ﷺ came out to us and said, "My close friend Gabriel came to me in a hurry and said, 'O Muhammad, by the One who sent you with the truth, Allah Almighty has a servant among his servants named Abdullah, who has been worshipping Allah for five hundred years atop a mountain in the sea. The mountain's width and length are thirty cubits, and it is surrounded by a four-thousand-farsakh sea from all sides. Allah, the Exalted, has granted him a pure spring of fresh water as wide as a finger, which collects in the bottom of the mountain. Additionally, there is a pomegranate tree that bears a fresh pomegranate for him every night to sustain him during the day. When the evening falls, he descends and performs ablution. Then he takes one of those pomegranates and eats it before standing for his prayer. He beseeches his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, at the time of his appointed meeting, to take his soul while he is in prostration, and to not let anything corrupt him in the earth. Allah answered his supplication and will resurrect him on the Day of Resurrection while he is still in prostration before Him. The Lord will say to him, 'Enter Paradise, O My servant, by My mercy.' But the servant will say, 'O Lord, rather by my deeds.' The Lord will repeat, 'Enter Paradise, O My servant, by My mercy.' Again, the servant will say, 'O Lord, rather by my deeds.' Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will then address the angels, 'Appraise My servant according to My favors and his deeds.' His vision will extend for five hundred years of worship, and his bodily blessings will remain beyond that. The Lord will then order, 'Take My servant to the Hellfire.' He will be dragged towards it and will cry out to his Lord, 'O Lord, by Your mercy, admit me to Paradise!' The Lord will respond, 'Return him.' He will be placed before his Lord. The Lord will ask him, 'O My servant, who created you when you were nothing?' The servant will answer, 'You, O Lord.' The Lord will ask, 'Was that by My favor or by My mercy?' The servant will answer, 'Rather, by Your mercy, O Lord.' The Lord will ask, 'Who empowered you to worship for five hundred years?' The servant will answer, 'You, O Lord.' The Lord will ask, 'Who placed you on a mountain amidst the waves, brought forth fresh water for you from salty water, and made a pomegranate tree bear a fresh pomegranate for you every night, even though it usually produces only once a year? Did you request that I take your soul in prostration, and did I grant you that?' The servant will answer, 'You, O Lord.' Allah, the Exalted, will declare, 'All of this was by My mercy, and by My mercy I will admit you to Paradise. Enter, My servant, paradise.' Jabriel said, 'O Muhammad, things are only dependent on the mercy of Allah, the Exalted.'"

✧ The prescribed prayer to the prayer that follows it is an expiation for what is between them. He said, then he said after that, "except for three: associating partners with Allah, breaking of the covenant, and abandoning the Sunnah. As for breaking the covenant, it is that you give an imam your pledge of allegiance, then you turn against him and fight him with your sword. As for abandoning the Sunnah, it is departing from the community."

  66. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7666Sahih

✧ Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said during the Farewell Hajj: "Behold, the friends of Allah are those who establish the five obligatory prayers that have been prescribed upon them, fast during Ramadan and consider their fasting as constantly ongoing, and give their obligatory charity while regarding it as a duty. They also abstain from major sins that Allah has forbidden." Then a man asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, what are the major sins?" He replied, "They are nine: associating partners with Allah, killing a believer without just cause, fleeing from the battlefield, usurping the property of orphans, consuming interest, falsely accusing chaste women, disobeying to the parents (especially when they are Muslims), and seeking permission to enter and reside in the Haram (the sacred sanctuary) before your permission." Then he said, "A man will not die until he performs these major sins and establishes prayer and pays the mandatory charity. In this case, he shall be among the Prophet ﷺ in a house whose gates are made of gold."

  67. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7667Sahih

✧ From Abu Hurayrah, he attributed it to the Prophet ﷺ who said: "No one who weeps out of fear of Allah ﷻ will enter the Fire until the milk returns to the udder; and dust in the path of Allah ﷻ and the smoke of Hell will never combine in the nostrils of a Muslim."

  68. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7668Sahih

✧ "Whoever remembers Allah and his eyes overflow out of fear of Allah until the ground is struck by his tears, Allah, exalted is He, will not punish him on the Day of Resurrection."

  69. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7669Sahih

✧ There is no deed of a day except that it is sealed upon it, and no night except that it is sealed upon it. Then, when the servant is prevented from deeds, the recording angels say, "O our Lord, this is the deed of Your servant before he was prevented from deeds, and You are most knowing of it."

ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās met ʿAbdullāh b. al-ʿĀs and he asked Ibn ʿAbbās: Which āyah in the Book of Allah is the most hopeful to you? He said: "Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah." (Zumar 39:53). Then he said: But the statement of Ibrāhīm "Do you not believe? He said, Indeed, but I wanted to satisfy my heart." (Baqarah 2:260)

  71. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7671Abu Dawud silent

✧ “Paradise has eight gates, seven of which are closed and one gate is open for repentance until the sun rises from its direction.”

  72. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7672Sahih

✧ Indeed, Satan said, “By Your might, O Lord, I will not cease leading Your servants astray as long as their souls are in their bodies.” So the Lord, Blessed and Exalted, said, “By My might and My majesty, I will not cease forgiving them as long as they seek My forgiveness.”

  73. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7673Sahih

✧ On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: “Every word the son of Adam utters is recorded against him. If he commits a sin and wishes to repent to Allah ﷻ, let him go to his companion, stretch out his hands to Allah ﷻ, then say: ‘O Allah, I repent to You from it and will never return to it again,’ for it will be forgiven him as long as he does not return to that deed.”

  74. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7674Sahih

✧ Ubadah — meaning Ibn Qurt — said: “Indeed, today you perform deeds which in your eyes are finer than a hair, but which we used to count among the destructive sins during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said: So I said to Abu Qatadah, “How would it be if he had lived to see this time of ours?” He said, “That is exactly what I say.”

  75. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7675Sahih

✧ “There is no Muslim who commits a sin except that the angel entrusted with recording his sins waits for three hours. If he seeks Allah’s forgiveness for that sin within any of those hours, it will not be recorded against him, nor will he be punished on the Day of Resurrection.”

✧ Indeed, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: “Whoever among you knows that I have power to forgive sins, I will forgive him and will not care, as long as he does not associate anything with Me.”

The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone continually asks pardon, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he did not reckon. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1518)

  78. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7678Sahih

✧ “Whoever commits a sin in this world and is punished for it, Allah is too just to double the punishment for His servant. And whoever commits a sin in this world and Allah conceals it, Allah is too generous to revisit anything He has already pardoned.”
