   أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ إِذَا حَجَّتْ مَرَّتْ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ؓ قَالَتْ: فَقُلْتُ لَهَا: « أَرِينِي الْإِنَاءَ الَّذِي كَانَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فِيهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ! قَالَتْ: فَأَخْرَجَتْهُ، فَقُلْتُ: هَذَا مَكُّوكُ الْمُفْتِي. فَقُلْتُ: أَرِينِي الْإِنَاءَ الَّذِي كَانَ يَغْتَسِلُ فِيهِ ؟ فَأَخْرَجَتْهُ، فَقُلْتُ: هَذَا الْقَفِيزُ الْمُفْتِي، هُوَ قَدَحُ الشُّطَّارِ

   ✧ When she performed Hajj she would pass by Umm Salamah ؓ [and] she said: I said to her: “Show me the vessel in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution!” She said: So she brought it out, and I said: “This is the makkūk of the muftī.” Then I said: “Show me the vessel in which he used to perform ghusl.” She brought it out, and I said: “This is the qafīz of the muftī; it is the cup of the generous.”

   دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ؓ فَقُلْتُ: أَرِينِي - فَذَكَرَهُ، وَفِيهِ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ فِي إِنَاءِ الْغُسْلِ: هَذَا مَخْتُومٌ، يَعْنِي الصَّاعَ، وَقَالَتْ فِي إِنَاءِ الْوُضُوءِ: هَذَا رُبُعُ الْمُفْتِي

   ✧ I entered upon Umm Salamah ؓ and said: “Show me—” and he mentioned it, and in it she said regarding the ghusl vessel: “This is a makhtūm,” meaning the ṣāʿ, and she said regarding the ablution vessel: “This is a quarter of the muftī.”

   أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كَانُوا فِي مَسِيرٍ، فَانْتَهَوْا إِلَى غَدِيرٍ فِي نَاحِيَةٍ مِنْهُ جِيفَةٌ، فَأَمْسَكُوا عَنْهُ حَتَّى جَاءَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذَا الْغَدِيرُ فِي نَاحِيَةٍ مِنْهُ جِيفَةٌ ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « اسْقُوا وَاسْتَقُوا ; فَإِنَّ الْمَاءَ يَحِلُّ وَلَا يَحْرُمُ

   ✧ The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were on a journey and they came to a pool in a corner of which was a carcass. They refrained from it until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them. They said: “O Messenger of Allah, this pool has a carcass in one corner of it.” He ﷺ said: “Water [it] and draw [from it], for water is lawful and is not forbidden.”

   « كُنَّا نَسْتَحِبُّ أَنْ نَأْخُذَ مِنْ مَاءِ الْغَدِيرِ نَغْتَسِلُ بِهِ فِي نَاحِيَةٍ ; لِلنَّهْيِ عَنِ الْبَوْلِ فِي الْمَاءِ الرَّاكِدِ

   ✧ “We used to prefer to take water from the pool to wash with in a corner because of the prohibition against urinating in stagnant water.”

    « كُنَّا نُسَافِرُ مَعَ مَيْمُونَةَ فَتَنْزِلُ عَلَى الْغُدْرَانِ فِيهَا الْجِعْلَانُ وَالْبَعْرُ، فَنَسْتَقِي لَهَا مِنْهُ، لَا تَرَى بِذَلِكَ بَأْسًا

    ✧ “We used to travel with Maymūnah and she would stop at pools containing beetles and dung, and we would draw water for her from them; she saw no harm in that.”

    أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِمَاءٍ، وَفِي الْمَاءِ قِلَّةٌ، « فَتَوَضَّأَ فِي جَوْفِ الْإِنَاءِ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَنُضِحَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ » فَسَعُدَ فِي أَنْفُسِنَا مَنْ أَصَابَهُ ذَلِكَ الْمَاءُ. قَالَ: وَأُرَاهُ قَدْ أَصَابَ الْقَوْمَ كُلَّهُمْ، ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّي بِهِمْ صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ was brought water and there was only a little water. He performed ablution in the middle of the vessel, then he ordered it to be sprinkled on the people, and we considered ourselves fortunate, those whom that water reached. He said: I think it reached all the people, then he stood and led them in the morning prayer.

    بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي بَيْتِي إِذْ أَقْبَلَ حُسَيْنٌ ؓ وَهُوَ غُلَامٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ عَلَى بَطْنِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، ثُمَّ وَضَعَ ذَكَرَهُ فِي سُرَّتِهِ، فَقُمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: « إِيتِنِي بِمَاءٍ »، فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِمَاءٍ فَصَبَّهُ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: « يُغْسَلُ مِنْ بَوْلِ الْجَارِيَةِ، وَيُصَبُّ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْغُلَامِ

    ✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in my house, Husayn ؓ came, and he was a young boy, until he sat on the belly of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he placed his penis on his navel, so I got up to him, and he said: "Bring me water." I brought him water and he poured it on him. Then he said: "The urine of a girl is washed, and water is poured on that of a boy."

    بَيْنَمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي بَيْتِي، وَحُسَيْنٌ ؓ عِنْدِي حِينَ دَرَجَ فَغَفَلْتُ عَنْهُ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَجَلَسَ عَلَى بَطْنِهِ فَبَالَ، فَانْطَلَقْتُ لِآخُذَهُ، فَاسْتَيْقَظَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: « دَعِيهِ » فَتَرَكْتُهُ حَتَّى فَرَغَ، ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَقَالَ: « إِنَّهُ لَيُصَبُّ مِنَ الْغُلَامِ، وَيُغْسَلُ مِنَ الْجَارِيَةِ، فَصُبُّوا صَبًّا ». ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّي، فَلَمَّا قَامَ احْتَضَنَهُ إِلَيْهِ، فَإِذَا رَكَعَ أَوْ جَلَسَ وَضَعَهُ، ثُمَّ جَلَسَ يَدْعُو فَبَكَى، ثُمَّ مَدَّ يَدَهُ. فَقُلْتُ حِينَ قَضَى الصَّلَاةَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُكَ الْيَوْمَ صَنَعْتَ شَيْئًا مَا رَأَيْتُكَ صَنَعْتَهُ، قَالَ ﷺ: « إِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أَتَانِي فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ ابْنِي هَذَا تَقْتُلُهُ أُمَّتِي، فَقُلْتُ: أَرِنِي تُرْبَتَهُ، فَأَرَانِي تُرْبَتَهُ حَمْرَاءَ

    ✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in my house, and Husayn ؓ was with me when he began to walk, and I was heedless of him, so he entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat on his belly and urinated. I went to take him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up and said: "Leave him." So I left him until he finished. Then he called for water and said: "Indeed water is poured on the urine of a boy, and the urine of a girl is washed, so pour it generously." Then he performed ablution, then he stood to pray. When he stood, he embraced him to himself. When he bowed or sat, he put him down. Then he sat supplicating and wept. Then he stretched out his hand. When he finished the prayer, I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw you today do something I have not seen you do." He ﷺ said: "Jibril ﷺ came to me and informed me that my son here will be killed by my community. I said: 'Show me his soil.' He showed me his red soil."

    بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُسْتَلْقِيًا عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ يُلَاعِبُ صَبِيًّا عَلَى صَدْرِهِ إِذْ بَالَ، فَقَامَتْ لِتَأْخُذَهُ وَتَضْرِبَهُ، فَقَالَ ﷺ: « دَعِيهِ، إِيتُونِي بِكُوزٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ »، فَنَضَحَ الْمَاءَ عَلَى الْبَوْلِ حَتَّى تَفَايَضَ الْمَاءُ عَلَى الْبَوْلِ، فَقَالَ ﷺ: « هَكَذَا يُصْنَعُ بِالْبَوْلِ، يُنْضَحُ مِنَ الذَّكَرِ، وَيُغْسَلُ مِنَ الْأُنْثَى

    ✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was lying on his back playing with a child on his chest, the child urinated. She (the mother) stood to take him and hit him, but he ﷺ said: "Leave him. Bring me a jug of water." He sprinkled the water on the urine until the water overflowed onto the urine. Then he ﷺ said: "This is how it is done with urine: it is sprinkled for a male, and washed for a female."

    ✧ A bedouin came and urinated in the mosque. "So the Prophet ﷺ ordered that the place be dug up, and a bucket of water was poured on it."

    كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَسِيرٍ، فَأَتَى عَلَى قَبْرَيْنِ يُعَذَّبُ صَاحِبَاهُمَا، فَقَالَ: « مَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي كَبِيرٍ »، ثُمَّ قَالَ: « بَلَى. أَمَّا أَحَدُهُمَا فَكَانَ يَغْتَابُ النَّاسَ، وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَكَانَ لَا يَتَأَدَّى مِنْ بَوْلِهِ ». ثُمَّ أَخَذَ ﷺ جَرِيدَةً رَطْبَةً أَوْ جَرِيدَتَيْنِ فَكَسَرَهُمَا، ثُمَّ غَرَسَ ﷺ كُلَّ كِسْرَةٍ عَلَى قَبْرٍ، فَقَالَ: « إِنَّهُ يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمَا مَا دَامَتَا رَطْبَتَيْنِ، أَوْ قَالَ: مَا لَمْ يَيْبَسَا

    ✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and he came upon two graves whose occupants were being punished. He said: "They are not being punished for something major." Then he said: "Yes, indeed. One of them used to backbite people, and the other used not to protect himself from his urine." Then he ﷺ took a fresh palm branch or two, broke them, and planted each piece on a grave, saying: "It will be lightened for them as long as these remain fresh," or he said: "as long as they do not dry."

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about dry dung that a man steps on. He said: "That clean place purifies him."

    « كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ؓ فَأُهْدِيَ لَهَا صَحْفَةٌ فِيهَا خُبْزٌ وَلَحْمٌ، وَقَامَتْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَقُمْنَا نُصَلِّي، فَخَالَفَتْ هِرَّةٌ إِلَى الطَّعَامِ فَأَكَلَتْ مِنْهُ. فَلَمَّا أَنْ سَلَّمْنَا أَخَذَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ ؓ الْقَصْعَةَ فَكَوَّرَتْهَا حَتَّى كَانَ حَيْثُ أَكَلَتِ الْهِرَّةُ مِنْ نَحْوِهَا، فَأَكَلَتْ مِنْهُ

    ✧ "I was with Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ ؓ, when a dish containing bread and meat was gifted to her. She stood for prayer and we stood to pray. A cat got to the food and ate from it. When we finished, Umm Salamah ؓ took the bowl and turned it around until the place where the cat had eaten was facing her, and she ate from it."

    مَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَسْقِي نَاقَةً لِي بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ، فَتَنَخَّمْتُ، فَأَصَابَتْ نُخَامَتِي ثَوْبِي، فَأَقْبَلْتُ أَغْسِلُ ثَوْبِي مِنَ الرَّكْوَةِ الَّتِي بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ، فَقَالَ: « يَا عَمَّارُ » مَا نُخَامَتُكَ وَدُمُوعُ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَّا بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْمَاءِ الَّذِي فِي رِكْوَتِكَ، إِنَّمَا يُغْسَلُ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ وَالْغَائِطِ، وَالْمَنِيِّ مِنَ الْمَاءِ الْأَعْظَمِ، وَالدَّمِ وَالْقَيْءِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by me while I was watering a she-camel of mine in front of me, so I spat, and my sputum fell on my garment. So I began to wash my garment from the water-skin that was in front of me. He said, 'O Ammar, your sputum and the tears of your eyes are only like the water in your water-skin. Only that is washed from urine, excrement, semen from the greatest water, blood, and vomit.'

    ✧ I entered upon Anas b. Malik ؓ and saw a wooden cup with him. He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to drink from it and perform ablution.'

    كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: « يَا بُنَيَّ، ادْعُ لِيَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الدَّارِ بِوَضُوءٍ » فَقُلْتُ: رَسُولُ اللهِ يَطْلُبُ وَضُوءًا، فَقَالَ: أَخْبِرْهُ أَنَّ دَلْوَهُ جِلْدُ مَيْتَةٍ. قَالَ ﷺ: « سَلْهُمْ: هَلْ دَبَغُوهُ ؟ » قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: « فَإِنَّ دِبَاغَهُ طُهُورُهُ

    ✧ I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, 'O my son, ask for water for ablution for me from this house.' I said, 'The Messenger of Allah is requesting water for ablution.' They said, 'Tell him that his bucket is made of the skin of a dead animal.' He ﷺ said, 'Ask them: Did they tan it?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'For its tanning is its purification.'

    مَاتَتْ شَاةٌ لَنَا كُنَّا نَحْتَلِبُهَا، فَسَأَلَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْهَا، فَقَالَ: « مَا فَعَلَتْ شَاتُكُمْ يَا أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ ؟ » قَالَتْ: قُلْتُ: مَاتَتْ، فَأَلْقَيْنَاهَا. قَالَ ﷺ: « أَلَا كُنْتُمْ تَنْتَفِعُونَ بِإِهَابِهَا ؟ » قَالَتْ: فَقِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ. قَالَ ﷺ: « إِنَّ دِبَاغَهَا أَحَلَّهَا كَمَا أَحَلَّ الْخَمْرَ الْخَلُّ

    ✧ A sheep of ours that we used to milk died, so we asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. He said, 'What happened to your sheep, O Umm Salamah?' She said: I said, 'It died, so we threw it away.' He ﷺ said, 'Would you not have benefitted from its hide?' She said: It was said, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is a dead animal.' He ﷺ said, 'Its tanning makes it lawful just as vinegar makes wine lawful.'

    « كُنَّا نُصِيبُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي مَغَانِمِنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ الْأَسْقِيَةَ وَالْأَوْعِيَةَ فَنَقْسِمُهَا كُلَّهَا مَيْتَةً

    ✧ We used to obtain from the spoils of the polytheists with the Prophet ﷺ water-skins and vessels, and we would divide them all even if they were from dead animals.

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me while I was in a tent. He said, 'What an excellent tent, if there is no dead animal in it.'

    إِنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ كَانَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَمَعَهُ نَاسٌ يُقْرِئُهُمْ، فَدَعَا بِشَرَابٍ، فَقَالَ: « أَمَا إِنَّ هَذَا الشَّرَابَ كَانَ فِي سِقَاءِ مَنِيحَةٍ لَنَا مَاتَتْ

    ✧ Ibn Mas'ud ؓ was in the mosque with some people whom he was teaching the Qur'an. He called for a drink and said, 'Indeed, this drink was in the water-skin of a sheep given to us for milking that died.'

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked for water while he was circumambulating the House. A man among them said, 'Shall I bring you a drink that we make?' He said, 'Yes.' He said: A vessel containing nabidh was brought. He ﷺ said, 'Why did you not turn a vessel over it and place a stick across it?' He said: He ﷺ drank from it and frowned. Then he called for water and poured it over it, then he drank and gave others to drink.

I said: 'Would you not remove the leather socks?' He said: 'No, I saw one better than me and you wipe over them' – meaning the Prophet ﷺ.

    ✧ The delegations of the jinn from the island came to the Prophet ﷺ and stayed with him. Then it occurred to them, and they wanted to return to their lands. They asked him to give them provision. He said: 'I have nothing to provide you with, but come close: every bone you pass by will be for you abundant meat, and every dung you pass by will be for you fruit.' Therefore, he forbade wiping oneself with dung and bones.

    ✧ While we were sitting with Ali ؓ, a man said to him: 'Show me the ablution of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!' He called Qanbar and said: 'Bring me a jug of water.' He washed his hands and face three times, and inserted some of his fingers into his mouth. Then he mentioned the hadith, in which is: 'The outside of the ears is part of the head and their inside is part of the face.' Then he sipped water after the ablution, then said: 'Thus was the ablution of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'

    ✧ I heard Ibn 'Umar ؓ say to the barber: "O boy, reach the two bones." He said: When he shaved him, he gave him his forearms and chest, and he shaved the hair on them while people were watching. Salim said to him: "O father, people think it is a sunnah?" He said: "Inform the people that it is not a sunnah, but Ibn 'Umar's hair was bothering him, so he wanted to lighten it from him."

     ✧ “The likeness of a person is the likeness of a river in which he bathes five times. What dirt could remain on him? He gets up for wudu and washes his hands, and every sin his hands committed falls away. He rinses his mouth, and every sin his tongue uttered falls away. Then he washes his face, and every sin his eyes looked at falls away. Then he wipes his head, and every sin his ears heard falls away. Then he washes his feet, and every sin his feet walked toward falls away.”

     ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: “O my son, keep to performing wudu thoroughly, and your guardian angels will love you, and your lifespan will be increased. O Anas, exaggerate in sniffing water into the nose after major impurity, for you will come out of your bath with no sin or error upon you.” He said: I said: “How is the exaggeration, O Messenger of God?” He ﷺ said: “Wet the roots of the hair and cleanse the skin. O my son, if you can remain in a state of wudu, then do so, for whoever death comes to while he is in a state of wudu will be granted martyrdom.”

     رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ ؓ جَالِسًا بِالْمَقَاعِدِ يَتَوَضَّأُ، فَمَرَّ بِهِ رَجُلٌ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنْ وُضُوئِهِ. ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ فَوَقَفَ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ، فَقَالَ: لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرُدَّ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتَكَلَّمْ حَتَّى يَقُولَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ - غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءَيْنِ

     ✧ I saw 'Uthman b. 'Affan ؓ sitting at the maqa'id performing wudu. A man passed by and greeted him, but he did not respond until he finished his wudu. Then he entered the mosque, stood before the man, and said: Nothing prevented me from responding to you except that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever performs wudu and then does not speak until he says: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger—his sins between the two wudus are forgiven.'

He said: 'Cleaning between in wudu is to clean between your fingers and nails, and cleaning between after eating, for there is nothing more burdensome to the angel who is with a servant than to smell food odor from one of you.'

     ✧ And I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrust his charity to anyone other than himself until he placed it in the hand of the beggar, and I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrust his wudu to anyone other than himself until he prepared his wudu for himself when he got up at night.

     رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا ؓ يَسْتَقِي مَاءً لِوُضُوئِهِ، فَبَادَرْتُهُ أَسْتَقِي لَهُ، فَقَالَ: مَهْ يَا أَبَا الْجَنُوبِ ; فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ ؓ يَسْتَقِي مَاءً لِوُضُوئِهِ فَبَادَرْتُهُ أَسْتَقِي لَهُ فَقَالَ: مَهْ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ; فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتَقِي مَاءً لِوُضُوئِهِ فَبَادَرْتُ أَسْتَقِي لَهُ فَقَالَ: « مَهْ يَا عُمَرُ ; فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَشْرَكَنِي فِي طُهُورِي أَحَدٌ

     ✧ I saw 'Ali ؓ drawing water for his wudu, so I hastened to draw it for him. He said: 'Stop, O Abu al-Janub, for I saw 'Umar ؓ drawing water for his wudu, and I hastened to draw it for him. He said: Stop, O Abu al-Hasan, for I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drawing water for his wudu, and I hastened to draw it for him. He said: Stop, O 'Umar, for I dislike that anyone should share in my purification.'

     ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a man performing ablution while he was washing his khuffs. He ﷺ said with his hand like this: "You were only commanded to wipe," and he spread the fingers of his two palms over his khuffs.

     ✧ I asked Ibn 'Abbas ؓ about wiping over the khuffs. He said: "Three days and their nights for the traveler, and one day and night for the resident."

     أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَسْحِ، وَكَانَ هُوَ يَغْسِلُ قَدَمَيْهِ قَالَ: فَقِيلَ لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ: كَيْفَ تَأْمُرُ بِالْمَسْحِ ؟ فَقَالَ: « بِئْسَمَا لِي إِنْ كَانَ مَهْنَاهُ لَكُمْ، وَإِثْمُهُ عَلَيَّ ; قَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُهُ وَيَأْمُرُ بِهِ، وَلَكِنَّهُ حُبِّبَ إِلَيَّ الْوُضُوءُ

     ✧ He used to command wiping, but he himself used to wash his feet. He said: It was said to him about that: How is it that you command wiping? He said: "How bad it would be for me if its benefit were for you and its sin upon me! I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do it and command it, but ablution has been made beloved to me."

     إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ سَأَلَ أَبَاهُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ؟ فَقَالَ: « نَعَمِ امْسَحْ عَلَيْهِمَا ». قَالَ الشَّامِيُّ: فَأَيْنَ قَوْلُ عَلِيٍّ ؓ ؟ فَقَالَ لِي أَبِي: أَيْ بُنَيَّ، ائْتِ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيِّبِ فَأَخْبِرْهُ بِمَا قُلْتَهُ ! قَالَ: فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ أَبِي يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ، وَيَسْأَلُكَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ، فَقَالَ: « إِنْ أَدْخَلْتَهُمَا طَاهِرَتَيْنِ فَامْسَحْ عَلَيْهِمَا حَتَّى تَنْزِعَهُمَا »

     ✧ A man from the people of Sham asked his father Abu Umamah about wiping over the khuffs. He said: "Yes, wipe over them." The Shami said: Then where is the statement of 'Ali ؓ? My father said to me: "O my son, go to Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib and inform him of what you said!" He said: So I went to him and said: "My father sends you greetings of peace and asks you about wiping over the khuffs." He said: "If you put them on while your feet were pure, then wipe over them until you take them off."

     ✧ I saw Qays ibn Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah ؓ, who had served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years. He said: "Then he came to the Tigris wearing two dyed khuffs, performed ablution, and wiped over his khuffs once, and he said like this with his palm, with his fingers on the top of his khuffs."

     ✧ We went out with Abu Musa ؓ to some gardens, and I felt the need to relieve myself, so I went for my need, then returned and sat by a stream. Abu Musa came upon me while I was about to take off my khuffs. He said: "Keep them on, and wipe until you remove them when you sleep."

     ✧ "We used to wipe over our khuffs." A man said to him: Did you hear it from the Prophet ﷺ? He said: "No, but we heard it from one of our companions who is not accused, saying: Wipe over the khuffs and do such and such, except that he did not mention (the Prophet) by name."

     كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَسِيرٍ، فَقَامَ بِالْغَلَسِ وَقَالَ: « يَا أَنَسُ، فِي إِدَاوَتِكَ مَاءٌ ؟ » قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَتَنَحَّى فَبَالَ، وَصَبَبْتُ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ فَتَوَضَّأَ، فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَمْسَحَ طَأْطَأْتُ ظَهْرِي لِأَنْظُرَ مَا يَصْنَعُ فَقَالَ: « هُوَ مَا تَرَى »، وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ

     ✧ I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. He got up in the darkness before dawn and said: "O Anas, is there water in your water-skin?" I said: Yes. He said: Then he went aside and urinated, and I poured water for him and he performed ablution. When he wanted to wipe, I lowered my back to see what he would do. He said: "It is as you see," and he wiped over his khuffs.

     ✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we did not remove our leather socks for three days and their nights for a need, so we fulfilled it. And we were with him in residence for a day and a night, wiping over our leather socks.

     « رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَالَ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ حَتَّى تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ، وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى خُفِّهِ الْأَيْمَنِ، وَيَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى خُفِّهِ الْأَيْسَرِ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ أَعْلَاهُمَا مَسْحَةً وَاحِدَةً، كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى أَثَرِ أَصَابِعِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ

     ✧ I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ urinate, then he came and performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks. He placed his right hand on his right leather sock and his left hand on his left leather sock, then wiped their tops with a single wipe. It was as if I were looking at the traces of the fingers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the leather socks.

     أَوَّلُ مَنْ رَأَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ خُفَّيْنِ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ ؓ، أَتَانَا وَنَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، وَعَلَيْهِ خُفَّانِ أَسْوَدَانِ، فَجَعَلَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمَا وَيَعْجَبُ مِنْهُمَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « أَمَا إِنَّهُ سَتَكْثُرُ لَكُمْ، أَيِ الْخِفَافُ ». قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَكَيْفَ نَصْنَعُ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « تَمْسَحُونَ عَلَيْهَا وَتُصَلُّونَ

     ✧ The first person I saw wearing leather socks in Islam was al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah ؓ. He came to us while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he had on two black leather socks. He began looking at them and was amazed by them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, they will become abundant for you, meaning the leather socks." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, how should we proceed?" He ﷺ said: "You wipe over them and pray."

     ✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "What is complete ablution?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until the prayer time arrived. He called for water and described the manner of ablution, then he sprinkled water under his garment and said: "This is complete ablution."

     ✧ There is no Muslim servant who performs ablution and does it well, then says three times: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger' – except that eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter from whichever he wishes.

     إِنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ صَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ، فَخَرَجَ مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ شَيْءٌ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: « عَزَمْتُ عَلَى صَاحِبِ هَذِهِ الرِّيحِ أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ وَيُعِيدَ صَلَاتَهُ ». قَالَ جَرِيرٌ ؓ: أَوَتَعْزِمُ عَلَى كُلِّ مَنْ سَمِعَهَا أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ، وَأَنْ يُعِيدَ الصَّلَاةَ ؟ قَالَ: « نِعْمَ مَا قَلْتَ، جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا »، فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ

     ✧ Umar ؓ led the people in prayer, and something passed from a person. Umar ؓ said: "I adjure the one who passed this wind to perform ablution and repeat his prayer." Jarir ؓ said: "Will you adjure everyone who heard it to perform ablution and repeat the prayer?" He said: "What a good thing you have said, may God reward you well." So he ordered them to do that.

     ✧ He was praying with his companions behind him, and a blind man came and stepped on a mat covering the head of a well, and he fell into the well. The people laughed, so the Messenger of God ﷺ ordered those who laughed to repeat the ablution.

He said: "We were with this one—meaning al-Hajjaj—and food was brought, and they ate, then they stood and prayed without performing ablution. I said: 'Did you not used to do this?' He said: 'No, we did not do it.'"

     ✧ The Prophet ﷺ entered upon his daughter Fatimah ؓ, and she brought him some meat and he ate. When he got up, she ؓ took hold of his cloak ﷺ and said: Will you not perform ablution? He ﷺ said: "From what, my little daughter?" She ؓ said: From that which the fire has changed. He ﷺ said: "Is not the purest of our food that which the fire has changed?"

He ﷺ said: 'No.' He said: 'Should we perform ablution after (eating) their meat?' He ﷺ said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Should we pray in sheep enclosures?' He ﷺ said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Should we perform ablution after (eating) their meat?' He ﷺ said: 'No.'

     ✧ When the verse of tayammum was revealed, I did not know how to perform it. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ to ask him, but I did not find him. I set out looking for him and met him coming toward me. When he saw me, he knew what I had come for. He struck his hands on the ground and wiped his face.

     ✧ Some men came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: “We are people who stay in the sandy desert, and we are affected by major ritual impurity, and among us are menstruating women and women in postpartum bleeding, and we do not find water for four months.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Use the earth.”
