✧ I came to Abu Ayyub al-Azdi and shook hands with him. He saw that my nails were long, and he said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him, and he said: "One of you asks me about the news of the heavens while he leaves his nails like the claws of birds, in which impurity and dirt gather."

machine translationThis is a mistake. He is not Wāṣil b. Sulaym; rather he is Abū Wāṣil Sulaymān b. Farrūkh, from Abū Ayyūb. And he is not one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ; he is Abū Ayyūb Yaḥyā b. Mālik al-ʿAtakī, one of the Followers (tābiʿūn).
in المطالب العالية, p. 88 - Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
machine translationThis Abū Ayyūb is a Follower (tābiʿī), and the hadith is mursal (a report in which a Follower narrates directly from the Prophet ﷺ).
