✧ He used to mention the name of Allah at the beginning of his food and at its end. I asked him: I saw your saying at the last morsel: In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end. He said: I will tell you about that. My grandfather Umayyah b. Makhshi, who was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, I heard him say: A man was eating while the Prophet ﷺ was looking. He did not mention the name of Allah until it was at the end of his food. Then he said: In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end. The Prophet ﷺ said: The devil kept eating with him until he mentioned the name, then nothing remained in his stomach except that he vomited it.

✧ A Jewish woman gifted a roasted sheep to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the people spread out their hands, the Prophet ﷺ said to them: Withhold your hands, for a limb of its limbs informs me that it is poisoned. I wanted, if you were a liar, to relieve the people of you, and if you were truthful, I knew that Allah would inform you of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Mention the name of Allah and eat. So we ate and nothing harmed any of us.

✧ I was the delegate of Banu al-Muntafiq to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We arrived at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ but did not find him in his house; we found 'A'ishah, the Mother of the Believers. She ordered a harīrah for us, so she made it for us, and we were brought a qinā'—and the qinā' is a large plate—containing dates. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and said, "Have you had anything, or shall I order something for you?" We said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the shepherd brought his sheep up to the fold, and with him was a lamb that was leaping about. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What did she give birth to, O so-and-so?" He said, "A bahmah." He said, "Then slaughter for us in its place a sheep." Then he turned to us and said, "Do not think—and he did not say 'let it not be thought'—that we slaughtered it for your sake. We have a hundred sheep and do not want them to increase. When the shepherd's ewe gives birth to a bahmah, we slaughter in its place a sheep." He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a wife," and he mentioned her long tongue and her vulgarity. He said, "Divorce her." I said, "I have a child from her." He said, "Then instruct her—he said: admonish her—and if there is any good in her, she will do it. And do not strike your wife as you strike your slave girl." He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution." He said, "Perform ablution thoroughly, pass your fingers between the fingers, and exaggerate in sniffing water into the nose unless you are fasting."

✧ From Nu'bail Al-'Anazi, from Jabir bin Abdullah, he said: When my father was killed, he left behind a debt, so I mentioned it in detail. In it, I said to my wife, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will come to us today at noon, so do not harm the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or speak to him." So he entered and she spread out a bed and a pillow for him, and he laid his head down and slept. I said to my servant, "Slaughter these sheep, as well as this fat calf, and pour out the contents before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wakes up, and I will be with you." So we did not finish slaughtering them until we were done, and he was still asleep. So I said to him, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he wakes up, he will call for ablution, and I fear that if he finishes, he will stand up without completing his ablution until we place the sheep before him." So when he got up, he said, "O Jabir, bring me something to purify myself." He did not finish his purification until I placed the sheep before him. Then he looked at me and said, "It seems that you prepared a kind of soup with the meat. Call Abu Bakr for me." Then he called his companions who were with him, and they entered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck with his hand and said, "In the name of Allah, eat." So they ate until they were full, and there was still a lot of meat left. And he mentioned the rest of the hadith.
