✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Banu Amr b. Awf on a Wednesday and saw something he had not seen before of their fencing around the palm trees. He said, "If only when you come to this Eid of yours you would stay until you hear from my words." They said, "Yes, by our fathers and mothers, O Messenger of Allah." When Friday came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Jumu'ah with them, then prayed two rak'ahs in the mosque, whereas before that day he used to go to his house. Then he sat straight and faced the people, and the Ansar, or those of them present, followed him until he met them. He said, "O company of the Ansar." They said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "In the Jahiliyyah, when you did not worship Allah, you used to carry the burden of the weak, do good in your wealth, and help the wayfarer, until Allah blessed you with Islam and blessed you with His Prophet, and now you fortify your wealth. In what the son of Adam eats there is reward, and in what the predator or the bird eats there is reward." The people returned, and there was not one of them but demolished thirty doors from his garden.

Notes

machine translation"This is a ḥadīth with a sound chain (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād), though they (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) did not record it. It contains a clear prohibition against fortifying walled gardens, date palms and other kinds of fruit against the needy and the hungry, so that they cannot eat from them." The two Shaykhs have recorded the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar from the Prophet ﷺ: "When one of you enters the garden of his brother, let him eat from it, but let him not take any away in the fold of his garment."
