✧ I entered upon Ali b. Abi Talib, I and two men, a man from us and a man from Banu Asad, I think. He sent them both in a direction and said: You two are foreigners, so exert yourselves on behalf of your religion. Then he entered the privy. Then he came out and took a handful of water and wiped himself with it. Then he came and recited the Quran. He saw that we found that objectionable, so Ali said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to go to the privy, relieve himself, then come out and eat with us bread and meat and recite the Quran, and nothing prevented him—or perhaps he said: and nothing held him back from reciting the Quran—except major ritual impurity, or except major ritual impurity.

- Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal
كان الإمام أحمد يوهن حديث علي ضعفه ويضعف أمر عبد الله بن سلمة
machine translationImam Aḥmad used to regard the ḥadīth of ʿAlī as feeble; he declared it weak (ḍaʿīf) and considered the standing of ʿAbdullāh b. Salimah weak.
in المستدرك على الصحيحين, p. 7175 - Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
إنما يتوقف الشافعي في ثبوته لأن مداره على ابن سلمة وكان قد كبر وأنكر من حديثه وعقله بعض النكرة وإنما روى هذا الحديث بعدما كبر
machine translationAl-Shāfiʿī only withheld judgement on its authenticity because its transmission revolves around Ibn Salimah, who had grown old, and some of his narrations were rejected and his mind was somewhat impaired. He only narrated this ḥadīth after he had grown old.
in المستدرك على الصحيحين, p. 7175 - Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim

machine translationAl-Nawawī in al-Khulāṣah: Most scholars disagreed with al-Tirmidhī and declared this ḥadīth weak (ḍaʿīf). That al-Tirmidhī singled it out in this way is evidence that he did not consider anyone else to have authenticated it.
