✧ Atika, the daughter of Abdul Muttalib, saw a dream that alarmed her. It was about a man named Dammam bin Amr Al-Ghifari. He appeared to be a terrifying figure to the Quraysh in Makkah for three consecutive nights. Atika became greatly disturbed by this dream and sent a message to her brother, Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, informing him about it. She said, "Oh, my brother, I had a dream last night that frightened me. It indicated that your people will face harm and calamity. The man in the dream approached on a camel and stopped at Aabtah. He then called out, 'O deceitful family of Ghadr, prepare yourselves in three.' I saw people gathering around him, and then he entered the mosque with his camel. The people gathered around him again. Suddenly, he reached the top of the Kāba and called out, 'O deceitful family of Ghadr, prepare yourselves in three.' Then his camel appeared on top of Abi Qubays, and he called out once again, 'O deceitful family of Ghadr, prepare yourselves in three.' He then picked up a rock and sent it rolling down the mountain. It kept rolling until it reached the bottom, destroying every house and building of your people. Al-Abbas said, "By Allah, this is indeed a vision. Conceal it." She said, "And you, conceal it. If this reaches the people of Quraysh, they will harm us." So Al-Abbas left her and met Walid ibn Utbah, who was his friend. He mentioned it to him and entrusted him with it. Walid mentioned it to his father, and the news spread. Al-Abbas said, "By Allah, I will go to the Kāba to circumambulate it." When I entered the mosque, there was Abu Jahl with a group from Quraysh talking about Aatikah's vision. Abu Jahl said, "O Abu al-Fadl, when did this prophetess say this to you?" I replied, "And what is that?" He said, "A vision seen by Atika, the daughter of Abdul-Muttalib. Have you, sons of Abdul-Muttalib, consented that your men should prophesy until even your women prophesy? We will wait for these three that Atika mentioned. If it is true, it will happen, and if not, we will write a document against you, for you are the most lying household in the Arab land. By Allah, there is no significant matter except that I have denied what she said. I said, 'She saw nothing, and I heard nothing like this.'" By evening, every woman from the Banu Abdul Muttalib came to me, blaming me for not preventing this corrupted man from causing harm to our men and approaching our women. They said, "Didn't you have any sense of honor?" I replied, "By Allah, you speak the truth. I had doubts, but if he repeats this, I will handle him." I sat there, waiting for the third day to confront him and make him say something. I cursed him in my heart, thinking that it was better to confront him than to curse him. Suddenly, I heard Ḍamḍam bin Amr reciting verses while standing on his camel at Aabtah. He had unraveled his turban and torn his shirt. He referred to the people of Mecca, saying, "Oh, deceitful and sinful Quraysh, your wealth is with Abu Sufyan, and your trade has been taken by Muhammad and his companions. Seek help from the devil." He then continued to recite for some time. This distracted me, and I only had my device until we left the city. Quraish suffered a great loss that day, as they had in the Battle of Badr. They lost many noble people and their best warriors. Atika, the daughter of Abdul Muttalib, said, "Wasn't the dream true and did it not warn you? You said that it wasn't true, and I didn't lie. Whoever denies the truth is indeed a liar."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: "What do you say about these captives?" ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said: "Go to a valley with much firewood, light a fire, then throw them into it." Al-ʿAbbās said: "May Allah sever your womb ties." ʿUmar said: "Their leaders and chiefs fought you and called you a liar, so strike their necks." Then Abū Bakr said: "They are your kinsmen and your people." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered for some need, and a group said: "The right view is what ʿUmar said." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and said: "What do you say about these? The likeness of these is as the likeness of brothers of theirs who were before them: Noah said, 'My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any of the disbelievers' [Nūḥ:26], and Moses said, 'Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts' [Yūnus:88] to the end of the verse, and Abraham said, 'Whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me, You are Forgiving, Merciful' [Ibrāhīm:36], and Jesus said, 'If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise' [al-Māʾidah:118]. You are a people among whom there is treachery. None of you should depart except with a ransom or by striking the neck." ʿAbd Allāh said: "I said: 'Except Suhayl b. Bayḍāʾ, for he should not be killed; I have heard him speak of Islam.' He fell silent, and there was no day I feared more that stones would fall on me from the sky than that day until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Except Suhayl b. Bayḍāʾ.'"

✧ When the captives were brought to Madinah, Sawdah bt. Zamʿah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, was with the family of ʿAfrāʾ in their mourning for ʿAwf and Muʿawwidh, the two sons of ʿAfrāʾ, and that was before the veil was imposed on them. Sawdah said: "By Allah, I was with them when news came: 'These captives have been brought.' I returned to my house and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in it, and there was Abū Yazīd Suhayl b. ʿAmr in a corner of the room with his hands tied to his neck with a rope. By Allah, when I saw Abū Yazīd like that, I could not stop myself from saying: 'Abū Yazīd, you surrendered! Why did you not die honorably?' I was only startled by the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from inside the house: 'O Sawdah, by Allah and His Messenger!' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with truth, when I saw Abū Yazīd with his hands tied to his neck with a rope, I could not stop myself from saying what I said.'"

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought Muharib Khasafah at Nakhl. They saw an opening among the Muslims, and a man from among them called Ghawrath b. al-Harith came until he stood over the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a sword and said, "Who will protect you from me?" He said, "Allah." The sword fell from his hand, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and said, "Who will protect you?" He said, "Be the best taker." He said, "Will you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He said, "I give you my covenant that I will not fight you and will not be with a people who fight you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ let him go. He went to his people and said, "I have come to you from the best of people." When the time for prayer came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the prayer of fear. The people were two groups: one group facing the enemy and one group praying with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He prayed two rak'ahs with those who were with him, and they departed and took the place of those facing the enemy. Those others came, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rak'ahs with them. Thus the people prayed two rak'ahs each, and the Prophet ﷺ prayed four rak'ahs.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not take down your cooking pot and do not bake your dough until I come.' I came, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, and the people came forward until I went to my wife. She brought out dough, and he spat in it and blessed it. Then he said, 'Call a woman baker to bake with you, and ladle from your cooking pot, but do not take it down.' They were a thousand. Jabir swore by Allah, exalted is He, that they ate until they left it and departed, while our cooking pot was still bubbling as it was, and our dough was being baked as it was." ✧ On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the Confederates: "Only twelve men remained with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was crouching from the cold and said, 'O Ibn al-Yaman, get up and go to the camp of the Confederates and see their condition.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I only stood up for you out of modesty because of the cold.' He said, 'Go out to the black stony ground and the cold of the morning. Go, O Ibn al-Yaman, no harm will befall you from heat or cold until you return to me.' I went to their camp and found Abu Sufyan kindling a fire among a small group around him, the Confederates having dispersed from him. When I sat among them, Abu Sufyan thought that someone from outside had entered among them. He said, 'Let each man of you take the hand of his companion.' I struck my hand on the one to my right and took his hand, then I struck my hand on the one to my left and took his hand. I remained among them for a little while, then I got up and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was standing praying. He gestured to me with his hand to come close, so I came close. Then he gestured again to come close, so I came close until he let part of the garment that was on him fall over me while he was praying. When he finished his prayer, he said, 'O Ibn al-Yaman, sit. What is the news?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the people have dispersed from Abu Sufyan, and only a small group kindling a fire remains. Allah has poured upon him cold like that which He poured upon us, but we hope from Allah what he does not hope.'"

✧ Amr b. Abd Wudd was the third of Quraysh. He had fought on the day of Badr until wounds disabled him, and he did not witness Uhud. When the day of the Trench came, he went out marked for battle to witness his moment. When he and his cavalry halted, Ali said to him, "O Amr, you used to pledge to God for Quraysh that no man would invite you to two qualities but you would accept one of them from him." Amr said, "Yes." Ali said to him, "Then I invite you to God (mighty and sublime) and His Messenger ﷺ and Islam." He said, "I have no need of that." He said, "Then I invite you to single combat." He said, "O son of my brother, why? By God, I would not like to kill you." Ali said, "But I would like to kill you." Amr became angry, dismounted from his horse, hamstrung it, then came forward to Ali and said, "Who will duel?" Ali stood up while he was masked in iron and said, "I will face him, O Prophet of God." He said, "It is Amr b. Abd Wudd. Sit down." Amr called out, "Will no man [come]?" The Messenger of God ﷺ gave him permission. Ali walked toward him saying: [al-Kamil] "Do not be hasty, for a responder to your call has come to you, not incapable; possessed of insight and discernment, and truthfulness is the salvation of every victor. I hope to establish over you the wailing of funeral mourners from a wide-cutting blow whose remembrance will remain in the convulsions of battle." Amr said to him, "Who are you?" He said, "I am Ali." He said, "Son of whom?" He said, "Son of Abd Manaf; I am Ali b. Abi Talib." He said, "You have, O son of my brother, among your paternal uncles those older than you, so turn back, for I dislike shedding your blood." Ali said, "But I, by God, do not dislike shedding your blood." He became angry, dismounted, drew his sword as if it were a flame of fire, then came toward Ali enraged. Ali met him with his shield. Amr struck the shield, split it, and the sword stuck in it, and it hit his head and wounded him. Ali struck him on the vein of the shoulder, so he fell and dust rose. The Messenger of God ﷺ heard the takbir and knew that Ali had killed him. Then Ali ؓ said: "Do the horsemen charge upon me thus? Away from me and from them! Hold back my companions. Today zeal and a sword fixed in the head, not useless, prevent me from flight—except against the son of Abd when he charged him. And I swore—so listen from the Book—that I would vindicate whoever declares God's oneness through piety: two men striking every striker. I returned when I left him laid low like a palm trunk between rugged ground and hills. I refrained from his garments, though if I had been the one stripped, my garments would weigh me down. He worshipped stones out of folly of mind, and I worshipped the Lord of Muhammad with truth." Then Ali came toward the Messenger of God ﷺ with his face shining. Umar b. al-Khattab said, "Why did you not plunder his coat of mail? The Arabs have no coat better than it." He said, "I struck him, and he shielded himself with his private parts, and I was ashamed of my cousin's son to strip him." And his cavalry fled defeated until they were forced into the trench.

✧ From Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that the Messenger of God ﷺ was with her when a man from the People of the House greeted us while we were in the house. The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up startled, and I followed him. It was Dihya al-Kalbi. He said, "This is Gabriel, commanding me to go to Banu Qurayza." He said, "You have laid down your weapons, but we have not. We sought the polytheists until we reached Hamra' al-Asad." That was when the Messenger of God ﷺ returned from the Trench. The Prophet ﷺ stood up startled and said to his companions, "I adjure you not to pray the Asr prayer until you come to Banu Qurayza." The sun set before they reached them. One group of Muslims said, "The Prophet ﷺ did not intend that they should abandon the prayer," so they prayed. Another group said, "We are under the Prophet's adjuration, and we bear no sin," so one group prayed out of faith and seeking reward, and another group left it out of faith and seeking reward. The Prophet ﷺ did not criticize anyone from either party. The Prophet ﷺ went out and passed by gatherings between him and Qurayza and said, "Did anyone pass by you?" They said, "Dihya al-Kalbi passed by us on a gray mule, beneath him a velvet saddlecloth." He said, "That was not Dihya, but Gabriel, sent to Banu Qurayza to shake them and cast terror into their hearts." The Prophet ﷺ besieged them and ordered his companions to shield themselves with their shields so that he could make them hear his words. He called to them, "O brothers of apes and pigs!" They said, "O Abu al-Qasim, you were not foul-mouthed." He besieged them until they came down to the judgment of Sa'd b. Mu'adh, for they were his allies. He judged among them that their fighting men be killed and their women and children taken captive.

✧ On the day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man, but he showed cowardice. Muhammad b. Maslama came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have never seen a day like today. Mahmud b. Maslama has been killed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for well-being, for you do not know what you will be tested with alongside them. When you meet them, say: O Allah, You are our Lord and their Lord, and our forelocks and their forelocks are in Your hand; You alone kill them. Then keep to the ground, sitting. If they overwhelm you, rise up and say Allahu akbar.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Tomorrow I shall send a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom they both love. He will not turn his back; Allah will grant victory at his hands.' The people craned their necks for it, while Ali that day had sore eyes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Go.' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I cannot see a place.' He spat into his eyes, tied a banner for him, and handed it to him. Ali said, 'O Messenger of Allah, on what basis shall I fight them?' He said, 'On the basis that they testify that there is no deity but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. When they do that, they have protected their blood and property from me except for what is due, and their reckoning is with Allah ﷻ.' He said, 'He met them and Allah granted victory at his hands.' The two Shaykhs agreed on transmitting the hadith of the banner, but they did not transmit it with this wording. They transmitted the mention of the banner from it.

✧ We witnessed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Khaybar when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spat into the eyes of Ali and he was cured, and he gave him the banner. Marhab came forward, saying in rajaz verse: 'Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, fully armed, a tried hero; when wars come, they blaze.' Ali came forward to him, saying in rajaz verse: 'I am the one my mother named Haydara, like a lion of the thickets with a fearsome look; I will give you full measure like the measuring of the largest container.' He struck Marhab and split his skull, killing him, and the victory was achieved.

We said, 'Congratulations to him for Paradise.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'No, by the One in Whose hand is Muhammad's soul, his cloak is now burning on him in the Fire; he stole it from the spoils of the Muslims on the day of Khaybar.' A man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in alarm when he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that, and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I took two shoe straps for a pair of shoes of mine.' The news had become hidden from Quraysh, so no report about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them, and they did not know what he was doing. Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith and 'Abd Allah b. Abi Umayya b. al-Mughira had met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Thaniyyat al-'Iqab, between Makkah and Madinah, and they sought permission to enter upon him. Umm Salama spoke to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, your paternal cousin and your maternal cousin and your brother-in-law. He said: «I have no need of them. As for my paternal cousin, he violated my honor, and as for my maternal cousin and brother-in-law, he is the one who said to me in Makkah what he said.» When the news of that reached them, and Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith had a son with him, he said: By Allah, either the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will give permission, or I will take my son by the hand and we will go into the land until we die of thirst or hunger. When that reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he felt compassion for them, so they entered upon him. Abu Sufyan recited to him his poem about his Islam and his apology for what had passed, and he said: [al-tawil] By your life, on the day I carry a banner, for the horses of al-Lat to overcome the horses of Muhammad, I am like a confused night traveler in the darkness of night, but this is the time of truth, I am guided and I guide. Say to Thaqif: I do not want to fight you, and say to Thaqif: that is with me, so make threats. A guide other than myself guided me, and led me to Allah the one whom I drove away with every driving. I flee swiftly, striving away from Muhammad, and I claim, even if I were not related to Muhammad. They are a band whose desires no one opposes, even if he has sound opinion, he is blamed and deemed weak. I seek to please them, and I am not one to utter with the people what I am not guided to in every sitting. I was not in the army that reached 'Amir, nor did my tongue or hand fall short of good. Tribes came from distant lands, followers came from Siham and Surdad. Indeed the one whom you expelled and reviled will strive for you like a man who is not lowly. He said: When he recited to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ "to Allah the one whom I drove away with every driving," the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck his chest and said: «You drove me away with every driving.» Ibn Ishaq said: «The mother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died at al-Abwa' while she was visiting her maternal uncles from Banu al-Najjar.»

He raised his head and looked at him three times, then he turned to his companions and said: «Was there not among you a righteous man who would stand up to this one when he saw me holding back my hand from his pledge and kill him?» They said: We do not know, O Messenger of Allah, what is in your heart. ✧ In the year of the conquest, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped at Dhu Tuwa, Abu Quhafa said to a daughter of his, who was the youngest of his children: O my little daughter, help me to look over Abu Qubays, for his sight had failed. So she helped him to look over it, and he said: O my little daughter, what do you see? She said: I see a gathered black mass, and I see a man moving in front of that black mass, approaching. He said: Those are the horses, my little daughter. Then he said: What do you see? She said: I see the black mass has spread out. He said: Then, by Allah, the horses have been driven forward, so hurry with me to my house. She went quickly, and when she descended with him to al-Abtah, she had a necklace of silver on her neck, and a person snatched it from her neck. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque, Abu Bakr went out and brought his father, leading him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: «Why did you not leave the old man in his house until I came to him?» He said: He walking to you, O Messenger of Allah, is more appropriate than you walking to him. So he seated him before him, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped his chest and said: «Submit, and you will be safe.» So he submitted. Then Abu Bakr stood up and took his sister by the hand and said: I adjure you by Allah and Islam, the necklace of my sister. By Allah, no one brought it. Then he said a second time: I adjure you by Allah and Islam, the necklace of my sister. No one brought it. He said: O my little sister, consider your necklace as a loss, for by Allah, trustworthiness among people is indeed scarce.

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marched to Tabuk, a man would continually lag behind, and they would say, “O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so has lagged behind.” He would say, “Leave him. If there is good in him, Allah will cause him to catch up with you, and if it is otherwise, Allah has relieved you of him.” Until it was said, “O Messenger of Allah, Abu Dharr has lagged behind, and his camel delayed him.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Leave him. If there is good in him, Allah will cause him to catch up with you, and if it is otherwise, Allah has relieved you of him.” Abu Dharr waited for his camel, but it delayed him. When it delayed him, he took his belongings and placed them on his back, and set out following the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on foot. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismounted at one of his halting places, and a Muslim lookout saw him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, this is a man walking on the road.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Be Abu Dharr.” When the people examined him, they said, “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, it is Abu Dharr.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “May Allah have mercy on Abu Dharr. He walks alone, dies alone, and will be resurrected alone.” Then time passed, and Abu Dharr was sent to al-Rabadha. When death approached him, he instructed his wife and his servant, “When I die, wash me and shroud me, then carry me and place me on the main road. The first riders who pass by you, say, 'This is Abu Dharr.'” When he died, they did that with him. A group of riders appeared and did not know of him until their mounts nearly trampled his bier. There was Ibn Mas'ud among a group of people from Kufa. They said, “What is this?” It was said, “The funeral of Abu Dharr.” Ibn Mas'ud burst into tears and said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke the truth: 'May Allah have mercy on Abu Dharr. He walks alone, dies alone, and will be resurrected alone.'” So he dismounted and took charge of him personally until he buried him. When they arrived in Madinah, the words of 'Abdullah and what he had undertaken were mentioned to 'Uthman.

✧ From 'Ali? This is the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mosque, and this is the house of 'Ali. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Bakr and 'Umar with Bara'a to the people of Makkah. They set out and met a rider. They said, “Who is this?” He said, “I am 'Ali. O Abu Bakr, give me the letter that is with you.” He said, “And what about me?” He said, “By Allah, I know nothing but good.” So 'Ali took the letter and went with it, and Abu Bakr and 'Umar returned to Madinah. They said, “What about us, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Nothing but good for you two, but it was said to me that none should convey from you except you or a man from your family.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Bakr and commanded him to proclaim these words. Then 'Ali followed him. While Abu Bakr was on part of the road, he heard the grumbling of the camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Bakr came out alarmed, thinking it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but it was 'Ali. He handed over to him the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which appointed him over the pilgrimage season, and 'Ali was commanded to proclaim these words. 'Ali stood during the days of Tashriq and proclaimed: “Allah is free from obligation to the polytheists, and His Messenger. So travel freely in the land for four months. No polytheist shall perform Hajj after this year, and no one shall circumambulate the House naked, and none shall enter Paradise except a believer.” 'Ali kept proclaiming it, and when his voice became hoarse, Abu Hurayra stood up and proclaimed. [Sahih al-isnad, but they did not include it. The narration from 'Ali has been authenticated with an explanation of this proclamation.] Sahih.

✧ Yā Abā ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, there are people here who recite according to the recitation of Musaylima. ʿAbdullāh said: "Is there a book other than the Book of Allah, or a messenger other than the Messenger of Allah after the spread of Islam?" So he sent him back. Then he came to him later and said: "O ʿAbdullāh, by the One besides whom there is no god, they are in the house reciting according to the recitation of Musaylima, and they have a muṣḥaf containing the recitation of Musaylima." That was during the time of ʿUthmān. ʿAbdullāh said to Qaraẓa, who was a cavalry commander: "Go and surround the house and seize those inside." He did so and brought him eighty men. ʿAbdullāh said to them: "Woe to you! Is there a book other than the Book of Allah, exalted is He, or a messenger other than the Messenger of Allah?" They said: "We repent to Allah, for we have wronged ourselves." So ʿAbdullāh left them and did not fight them, and he sent them to Syria, except their leader Ibn al-Nawwāḥa, who refused to repent. ʿAbdullāh said to Qaraẓa: "Go and strike his neck and throw his head into his mother's lap, for I think she knew of his deed." So he did.

✧ The Banū Saʿd ibn Bakr sent Ḍimām ibn Thaʿlaba to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came to us, made his camel kneel at the gate of the mosque, hobbled it, then entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting in the mosque with his companions. He said: "Which of you is the son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I am the son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib." He said: "Muḥammad?" He said: "Yes." He said: "O Muḥammad, I am going to question you and be harsh in questioning, so do not take it personally against me, for I will not take it personally." He said: "Ask whatever seems fit to you." He said: "I adjure you by Allah, your God and the God of those before you and the God of those who will come after you: Did Allah send you to us as a messenger?" He said: "O Allah, yes." He said: "I adjure you by Allah, your God and the God of those before you and the God of those who will come after you: Did Allah command you that we should worship Him and not associate anything with Him, and that we should cast off these idols and rivals that our forefathers used to worship?" He ﷺ said: "O Allah, yes." Then he began to mention the obligatory duties of Islam one by one—prayer, zakāt, fasting, ḥajj, and all the obligatory duties of Islam—adjuring him at each obligation as he had adjured him in the previous one. When he finished, he said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are His servant and messenger. I will perform these obligations and avoid what you have forbidden me; I will not add or subtract." Then he turned away to his camel. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said when he turned: "If the man with the two braids speaks the truth, he will enter Paradise." Ḍimām was a sturdy, hairy man with two locks of hair. Then he went to his camel, untied its hobble, and returned to his people. They gathered around him, and the first thing he said was while cursing al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā. They said: "Stop, O Ḍimām! Beware of leprosy, elephantiasis, and madness." He said: "Woe to you! By Allah, they can neither harm nor benefit. Allah has sent a messenger and revealed to him a book by which He has rescued you from what you were in. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muḥammad is His servant and messenger. I have come to you from him with what he commanded you and forbade you." By Allah, by the evening of that day there was no man or woman in his settlement who was not a Muslim. Ibn ʿAbbās said: "We have not heard of any delegate of a people better than Ḍimām ibn Thaʿlaba." [The two Shaykhs agreed on the arrival of Ḍimām in Madinah, but neither of them reported the ḥadīth in full, and this is authentic.]

So I went with him. When we reached Baqi', he said, 'Peace be upon you, O people of Baqi', may what you are in this morning be good for you.
