✧ Amr b. Abd Wudd was the third of Quraysh. He had fought on the day of Badr until wounds disabled him, and he did not witness Uhud. When the day of the Trench came, he went out marked for battle to witness his moment. When he and his cavalry halted, Ali said to him, "O Amr, you used to pledge to God for Quraysh that no man would invite you to two qualities but you would accept one of them from him." Amr said, "Yes." Ali said to him, "Then I invite you to God (mighty and sublime) and His Messenger ﷺ and Islam." He said, "I have no need of that." He said, "Then I invite you to single combat." He said, "O son of my brother, why? By God, I would not like to kill you." Ali said, "But I would like to kill you." Amr became angry, dismounted from his horse, hamstrung it, then came forward to Ali and said, "Who will duel?" Ali stood up while he was masked in iron and said, "I will face him, O Prophet of God." He said, "It is Amr b. Abd Wudd. Sit down." Amr called out, "Will no man [come]?" The Messenger of God ﷺ gave him permission. Ali walked toward him saying: [al-Kamil] "Do not be hasty, for a responder to your call has come to you, not incapable; possessed of insight and discernment, and truthfulness is the salvation of every victor. I hope to establish over you the wailing of funeral mourners from a wide-cutting blow whose remembrance will remain in the convulsions of battle." Amr said to him, "Who are you?" He said, "I am Ali." He said, "Son of whom?" He said, "Son of Abd Manaf; I am Ali b. Abi Talib." He said, "You have, O son of my brother, among your paternal uncles those older than you, so turn back, for I dislike shedding your blood." Ali said, "But I, by God, do not dislike shedding your blood." He became angry, dismounted, drew his sword as if it were a flame of fire, then came toward Ali enraged. Ali met him with his shield. Amr struck the shield, split it, and the sword stuck in it, and it hit his head and wounded him. Ali struck him on the vein of the shoulder, so he fell and dust rose. The Messenger of God ﷺ heard the takbir and knew that Ali had killed him. Then Ali ؓ said: "Do the horsemen charge upon me thus? Away from me and from them! Hold back my companions. Today zeal and a sword fixed in the head, not useless, prevent me from flight—except against the son of Abd when he charged him. And I swore—so listen from the Book—that I would vindicate whoever declares God's oneness through piety: two men striking every striker. I returned when I left him laid low like a palm trunk between rugged ground and hills. I refrained from his garments, though if I had been the one stripped, my garments would weigh me down. He worshipped stones out of folly of mind, and I worshipped the Lord of Muhammad with truth." Then Ali came toward the Messenger of God ﷺ with his face shining. Umar b. al-Khattab said, "Why did you not plunder his coat of mail? The Arabs have no coat better than it." He said, "I struck him, and he shielded himself with his private parts, and I was ashamed of my cousin's son to strip him." And his cavalry fled defeated until they were forced into the trench.
