26. Emigration
al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 4257Sahih
«أَنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ عَمَّرَ نَبِيَّهُ ﷺ بِمَكَّةَ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً»
✧ 'That Allah ﷻ kept His Prophet ﷺ in Makkah for thirteen years.'
al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 4258Sahih
✧ The Prophet said: 'Allah ﷻ revealed to me, "Whichever of these three lands you settle in, it is your abode of emigration: Madinah, al-Bahrayn, or Qinnasrīn."'
al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 4259Sahih
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in Makkah when he was commanded to emigrate, and it was revealed to him: {And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a truthful entrance and to exit a truthful exit, and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority"} [Al-Isra 80].

✧ From Qatada regarding His saying, the Exalted, {And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a truthful entrance and to exit a truthful exit"} [Al-Isra 80]: 'So Allah brought him out of Makkah to Madinah as a truthful exit, and He brought him into Madinah as a truthful entrance.' He said: 'And the Prophet of Allah ﷺ knew that he had no power over this matter except with authority, so he asked for a supporting authority for the Book of Allah, the limits of Allah, the obligations of Allah, and the establishment of the Book of Allah. Indeed, authority is a might from Allah which He placed among His servants. Were it not for that, some of them would raid others, and the strong among them would devour the weak.'

«اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَخْرَجْتَنِي مِنْ أَحَبِّ الْبِلَادِ إِلَيَّ فَأَسْكِنِّي أَحَبَّ الْبِلَادِ إِلَيْكَ»
✧ O Allah, You have brought me out of the most beloved land to me, so settle me in the most beloved land to You.
al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 4262Sahih
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said to the Muslims: "I have been shown the abode of your emigration: a salty land with date palms between two lava tracts," namely the two harrahs.
al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 4263Sahih
✧ Ali purchased his own self and wore the garment of the Prophet ﷺ, then slept in his place. The polytheists were shooting arrows at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had clothed him in a striped cloak. Quraysh wanted to kill the Prophet ﷺ, so they kept shooting at Ali, thinking he was the Prophet ﷺ because he had put on the striped cloak. Ali began to writhe, and when it became clear that he was Ali, they said: "You are indeed despicable; you are writhing, whereas your companion would not writhe, and we have disapproved of that in you."

✧ Ali said when he spent the night on the bed of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in verse (meter: al-tawil): I protected with my own self the best of those who have trodden the pebbles, And who circumambulated the Ancient House and the Stone; A Messenger of a god who feared they would plot against him, So the God of bounty saved him from the plot. The Messenger of Allah spent the night in the cave safe and protected, In the keeping of God and under a veil; While I spent the night watching them, and they did not suspect me, And I had resolved myself upon death or capture. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.

✧ On the night the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to sleep on his bed and he left Makkah as an emigrant, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took me to the idols and said: "Sit." So I sat beside the Kaaba. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ climbed onto my shoulder and said: "Rise." So I rose with him. When he saw my weakness beneath him, he said: "Sit." So I sat and let him down from me. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat for me and said: "O Ali, climb onto my shoulder." So I climbed onto his shoulders. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose with me, and it seemed to me that if I wished I could touch the sky. I climbed onto the Kaaba, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved aside. I threw down their greatest idol, which was of copper, fastened to the ground with iron pegs. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Work at it." So I worked at it, and I kept working at it while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Go on, go on." I kept working at it until I got a firm hold of it. Then he said: "Smash it." So I smashed it and broke it, and I came down.

✧ The Prophet ﷺ said to Jibril ﷺ: "Who will emigrate with me?" He said: "Abu Bakr al-Siddiq."

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out from Mecca to Medina and Abu Bakr was with him, Abu Bakr carried all his wealth, which was five or six thousand dirhams. Then my grandfather, Abu Qhafa, came to me, although he had lost his sight, and he said, "By Allah, he has saddened you with his wealth, taking it with him." I said, "No, father, he has left us with plenty of goodness." I went to some rocks and placed them in a corner of the house, and Abu Bakr used to store his wealth there. I covered the rocks with a cloth and then I took my grandfather by the hand and placed it on the cloth. He said, "Indeed, if he has left all this, then it is good." She said, "By Allah, he did not leave a little or a lot."

✧ Some men mentioned, during the caliphate of Umar, that they considered Umar superior to Abu Bakr. That reached Umar, and he said: "By Allah, a single night of Abu Bakr is better than the family of Umar, and a single day of Abu Bakr is better than the family of Umar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out to go to the cave with Abu Bakr. He would walk for a while in front of him and for a while behind him, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed it and said: 'O Abu Bakr, why do you walk sometimes in front of me and sometimes behind me?' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I remember the pursuers and walk behind you; then I remember the ambush and walk in front of you.' He said: 'O Abu Bakr, if anything were to happen, would you prefer it to befall you rather than me?' He said: 'Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth, no affliction would befall but that I would wish it upon myself rather than you.' When they reached the cave, Abu Bakr said: 'Stay where you are, O Messenger of Allah, until I inspect the cave for you.' He entered and inspected it. When he was in its upper part, he remembered that he had not inspected a side chamber, so he said: 'Stay where you are, O Messenger of Allah, until I inspect the side chamber.' He entered and inspected it, then said: 'Come down, O Messenger of Allah.' So he came down. Umar said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, that night is better than the family of Umar.'"

✧ He informed him that he heard Suraqah b. Ju'shum say: "The messengers of the disbelievers of Quraysh came to us, offering a bloodwit for each of the two, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr, to whoever killed or captured them. While I was sitting in one of the gatherings of my people, the Banu Mudlij, a man from among them came and stood over us and said: 'O Suraqah, I have just seen some dark figures by the shore; I think they are Muhammad and his companions.' Suraqah said: 'I knew that they were indeed they, so I said to them: "They are not them; rather I saw so-and-so and so-and-so. Go as seekers."' He said: 'Then I stayed in the gathering only a short while before I got up, entered my house, and ordered my slave girl to bring out my horse, which was behind a hillock, and hold it for me. I took my spear and went out from the back of the house, drawing the butt of the spear on the ground and holding the spearhead high, until I came to my horse and mounted it. I urged it on, and it galloped with me until I saw their two dark figures. When I drew near them, close enough for them to hear my voice, my horse stumbled and I fell off. I got up and reached for my quiver, took out the divining arrows, and drew lots with them, and the one I disliked came out: that I should not harm them. But I disobeyed the arrows and mounted my horse, urging it on until, when I drew near them, I heard the recitation of the Prophet ﷺ, and he was not turning around, while Abu Bakr was turning around often. Then the forelegs of my horse sank into the ground up to the knees, and I fell off. Then I spurred it and rose, and it could hardly pull out its forelegs. When it stood upright, there was a column of smoke rising from the tracks of its forelegs into the sky.'" Abdullah (the transmitter) said: "That is the smoke that appears without fire." "Then I took out the divining arrows and cast lots, and the one I disliked came out: that I should not harm them. So I called out to them for safety, and they stopped. I rode my horse until I came to them. It occurred to me, because of the obstacle I had encountered in reaching them, that the affair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would prevail. I said to him: 'Your people have set a bloodwit for you.' I told them the news of their journey and what the people intended against them, and I offered them provisions and goods, but they took nothing from me and asked only that I conceal their whereabouts. I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to write for me a document of peace by which I would be safe, and he ordered Amir b. Fuhayrah, the freedman of Abu Bakr, and he wrote it for me on a piece of leather. Then they went on."

And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory. Those who have been expelled from their homes unjustly" [Quran 22:39-40]. Abu Bakr realized that there would be a battle.

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr set out in concealment, they passed by a slave tending sheep and asked him for milk to drink. He said: "I have no ewe that can be milked, except that here is a young she-goat that conceived at the beginning of winter and has miscarried, and no milk remains for her." He said: "Bring her." So he brought her, and the Prophet ﷺ tied her legs, wiped her udder, and prayed until she let down milk. He said: "Abu Bakr came with a leather shield, and Abu Bakr milked; then he milked and gave the shepherd to drink; then he milked and drank." The shepherd said: "By Allah, who are you? For by Allah, I have never seen the like of you." He said: "Do you think you can keep my secret until I tell you?" He said: "Yes." He said: "I am Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah." He said: "Are you the one whom Quraysh claim is a Sabian?" He said: "They do say that." He said: "I bear witness that you are a prophet, and I bear witness that what you have brought is true, and that no one does what you have done except a prophet; and I will follow you." He said: "You cannot do that today; but when you hear that I have prevailed, come to us."

✧ From his father Hisham b. Hubaysh b. Khuwaylid, a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left Makkah as an emigrant to Madinah, with Abu Bakr and the freedman of Abu Bakr, Amir b. Fuhayrah, and their guide al-Laythi, Abd Allah b. Urayqit. They passed by the tent of Umm Ma'bad al-Khuza'iyyah. She was a sturdy, hardy woman who would sit on her knees in the courtyard of the tent and then serve water and food. They asked her for meat and dates to buy, but they found none of that with her. The people were exhausted and emaciated. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at a sheep in the corner of the tent and said: "What is this sheep, O Umm Ma'bad?" She said: "A sheep left behind by weakness from the flock." He said: "Does it have any milk?" She said: "She is too weak for that." He said: "Will you permit me to milk her?" She said: "May my father and mother be your ransom; if you see any milk in her, milk her." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for her, wiped her udder with his hand, mentioned the name of Allah Almighty, and prayed for her sheep. She spread her legs for him and let down milk abundantly; she chewed her cud. He called for a vessel large enough for a group to sit around, and milked into it a copious flow until froth appeared on top. Then he gave her to drink until she was satisfied, and gave his companions to drink until they were satisfied, and he himself drank last, until they were all refreshed. Then he milked into it a second time after a pause until he filled the vessel, and left it with her. Then he took a pledge from her, and they departed from her. She had not waited long before her husband Abu Ma'bad came, driving some lean goats that staggered from emaciation, with little marrow. When Abu Ma'bad saw the milk, he was amazed and said: "Where did you get this, O Umm Ma'bad, when the sheep is away and barren, and there is no milking animal in the house?" She said: "No, by Allah, except that a blessed man passed by us, and his condition was such and such." He said: "Describe him to me, O Umm Ma'bad." She said: "I saw a man of evident cleanliness, bright-faced, handsome in form; no stoutness marred him, nor did leanness diminish him. He was comely and well-proportioned; in his eyes there was deep blackness, in his eyelashes there was thickness, in his voice there was a slight hoarseness, in his neck there was a fine length, in his beard there was fullness. He had arched eyebrows and joined eyebrows. When he was silent, dignity surrounded him; when he spoke, he captivated and was crowned with splendor. He was the most beautiful of people and most radiant from a distance, and the finest and most beautiful from near. His speech was sweet and distinct, neither scanty nor verbose; his words were like strung pearls flowing down. He was of medium height; tallness did not make him unattractive, nor did shortness disappoint the eye. He was a branch between two branches, the freshest of the three in appearance and the best in stature. He had companions surrounding him: if he spoke, they listened to his words; if he commanded, they hastened to his command. He was served and honored; he was not frowning nor weak-minded." Abu Ma'bad said: "By Allah, this is the man of Quraysh whose affair was mentioned to us, and I intended to accompany him, and I will do so if I find a way." In the morning, a voice in Makkah rose high, they could hear the voice but did not know its owner, saying (meter: al-tawil): May God, the Lord of mankind, reward with the best reward two companions Who alighted at the tent of Umm Ma'bad. They stopped there with guidance, and by him she was guided; So he has triumphed who became a companion of Muhammad. O Banu Qusayy, what has God withheld from you Of deeds that cannot be recompensed, and of sovereignty? May Abu Bakr be congratulated on the good fortune of his ancestor By accompanying him; whom God makes happy, he is happy. May Banu Ka'b be congratulated on the standing of their maiden And her seat as a lookout for the believers. Ask your sister about her sheep and her vessel, For if you ask the sheep, it will testify. He called for a barren sheep, and it yielded For him pure milk, the udder of the sheep frothing. He left it as a pledge with her for a milker Who returns it again after coming to drink. When Hassan heard the caller saying that, he composed verses in response, saying (meter: al-tawil): A people have failed from whom their prophet departed, And blessed is he who travels to them and comes. He departed from a people whose minds went astray, And settled among a people with a renewed light. Their Lord guided them with it after misguidance, And He directs them; whoever follows the truth is rightly guided. Are the misguided of a people who behaved foolishly in blindness equal To guides who are guided by one rightly guided? Upon the people of Yathrib have alighted The mounts of guidance, descending upon them with the most fortunate. A prophet who sees what the people around him do not see, And recites the Book of Allah in every gathering. If he speaks one day about an unseen matter, Its confirmation comes that day or the next morning.

One day they returned after waiting a long time. When they had gone into their homes, a Jew climbed to the top of one of their forts to look out, and he caught sight of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions, dressed in white, with the mirage shimmering around them. ✧ When a man among us arrived in Madinah and had an acquaintance there, he would stay with his acquaintance; if he had no acquaintance there, he stayed in the Suffah. I arrived and stayed in the Suffah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would provide us daily a mudd of dates between two people and clothe us with rough cloth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in some of the daytime prayer. When he said the salam, the people of the Suffah called to him from right and left: O Messenger of Allah, the dates have burned our bellies and the rough cloth has worn out from us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to his pulpit, ascended it, praised Allah and extolled Him, then mentioned the hardship he met from his people until he said: "There passed over me and my companion ten and some [days] when I and he had no food except berir (fruit of the arak tree)." The narrator said: I said to Abu Harb: What is berir? He said: The food of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, dates of the arak tree. "Then we came to these brothers of ours from the Ansar, and the main part of their food was dates, and they shared them with us. By Allah, if I could find bread and meat for you, I would satisfy you with it. But perhaps you will live to a time when a large bowl will be brought to one of you in the morning and another in the evening." They said: O Messenger of Allah, are we better today or on that day? He said: "Rather you are better today. Today you love one another, but on that day some of you will strike the necks of others." I think he said: "hating one another."

✧ The people of the Suffah were the guests of Islam; they had no family or wealth to take refuge with. By Allah, besides whom there is no god, I would press my liver to the ground from hunger and tie a stone on my belly from hunger. One day I sat at the side of their path from which they came out. Abu Bakr passed by me, so I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah, only asking him so that he would take me along, but he passed and did not do so. Then Umar passed by, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah, the Exalted, only asking him so that he would take me along, but he passed and did not do so. Then Abu al-Qasim ﷺ passed by and smiled when he saw me and said: "Abu Hurayrah." I said: At your service, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Come along" and went on. I followed him. He entered his house, and I sought permission and he permitted me. He found milk in a bowl and said: "Where did you get this milk?" It was said: So-and-so gifted it to us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Abu Hurayrah." I said: At your service. He said: "Go to the people of the Suffah and call them. They are the guests of Islam; they have no family or wealth to take refuge with." When charity came to him, he would send it all to them and take nothing from it; when a gift came to him, he would send for them and take some of it and include them in it. That saddened me, and I said: What is this bowl among the people of the Suffah while I am his messenger to them? He will order me to pass it around among them, so what might I get from it? I had hoped to get from it something that would suffice me. But there was no escape from obeying Allah and obeying His Messenger ﷺ. So I went to them and called them. When they entered upon him and took their seats, he said: "Abu Hirr, take the bowl and give it to them." I took the bowl and began handing it to a man who would drink until quenched, then return it, and I handed it to another who would drink until quenched, until I finally came with it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and all the people had drunk their fill. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the bowl and placed it on his hands, then raised his head to me and smiled and said: "Abu Hirr." I said: At your service, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Sit and drink." I drank. Then he said: "Drink." I drank. Then he said: "Drink." I drank, and I kept drinking while he said "Drink" until I said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I find no passage for it. He took the bowl, praised Allah, mentioned His name, and then drank.

✧ I heard Sahl b. Abdullah al-Tustari say: When Allah, may He be exalted, sent the Prophet ﷺ, there were in the world seven categories of people: kings, farmers, livestock owners, merchants, artisans, laborers, and the weak and poor. He did not command any of them to leave what he was in, but He commanded them to knowledge, certainty, piety, and trust in all that they were in. Sahl, may Allah have mercy on him, said: It is fitting for a rational person to say: It is not fitting for me, after knowing that I am Your servant, to hope and expect other than You, nor to imagine about You, since You created me and formed me as a servant to You, that You would entrust me to myself or hand over my affairs to other than You.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The best of my nation, as the Highest Assembly informed me, are a people who laugh openly in the expanse of the mercy of their Lord, may He be exalted, and weep secretly from fear of the severity of the punishment of their Lord, may He be exalted. They remember their Lord in the morning and evening in the good houses, the mosques, and call upon Him with their tongues in hope and fear, and ask Him with their hands lowered and raised, and turn with their hearts again and again. Their burden on people is light, and on themselves heavy. They walk on the earth barefoot on their feet like the creeping of ants, without vanity or arrogance. They walk with tranquility and draw near through the means, recite the Quran, bring offerings, and wear worn-out garments. Over them are witnesses present from Allah, the Exalted, and a preserving eye. They discern the servants and reflect on the lands. Their spirits are in this world and their hearts in the Hereafter. They have no concern except their leader. They have prepared provisions for their graves, the passage for their path, and readiness for their standing." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited: {That is for him who fears My station and fears My threat} [Ibrahim: 14].

✧ Whatever was revealed as 'O you who believe' was in Madinah, and whatever was revealed as 'O mankind' was in Makkah.

«قَرَأْنَا الْمُفَصَّلَ حِينًا وَحَجَجْنَا بِمَكَّةَ لَيْسَ فِيهَا يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا»
✧ "We recited the Mufassal at a certain time, and we performed Hajj while in Makkah there was no 'O you who believe' in it."
