✧ We were at a passage of people, and the riders would tell us, so we asked them: What is this matter and what is with the people? They said: A prophet who claims that Allah Almighty sent him, and that Allah revealed to him such and such. The Arabs were waiting for the conquest to accept Islam, and they used to say: Wait for him; if he prevails, then he is a prophet, so believe him. After the event of the conquest, every people hastened to accept Islam to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came and stayed with him for such and such, then he came from him, and we met him. He said: I have come to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ truly, and he «commands you with such and such. When the prayer is due, let one of you give the adhan, and let the one among you with the most Qur'an lead you.» They looked and did not find anyone with more Qur'an than me, so they put me forward, and I was a boy of seven or six years. I used to pray, and when I prostrated, my cloak would become tight on me. He said: A woman from the tribe said: Cover from us the private part of your reciter. He said: So I was given a Yemeni garment with knots for six or seven dirhams, and I was never happier with anything than I was with that.

machine translationHe used to consider the case of ʿAmr b. Salamah weak (ḍaʿīf), and once he said: "Leave him, he is nothing (laysa bi-shayʾ)"; it is clear.
