✧ On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "That rout on the day of Uhud—I withdrew and said, 'I will defend myself; either I will be martyred or I will escape until I meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' While I was in that state, there was a man with his face covered, and I did not know who he was. The polytheists advanced until I thought they had mounted him. He filled his hand with pebbles and threw them in their faces, and they retreated on their heels backwards until they reached the mountain. He did that repeatedly, and I did not know who he was, while between me and him was al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad. While I was about to ask al-Miqdad about him, al-Miqdad said, 'O Sa'd, this is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ calling you.' I said, 'Where is he?' Al-Miqdad pointed to him, and I stood up as if no harm had afflicted me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Where were you today, O Sa'd?' I said, 'Where I saw the Messenger of Allah.' He seated me in front of him, and I began shooting and saying, 'O Allah, Your arrow—shoot Your enemy with it,' and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying, 'O Allah, answer Sa'd; O Allah, make Sa'd's aim true. Shoot, Sa'd, may my father and mother be your ransom.' There was no arrow I shot but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O Allah, make his aim true and answer his supplication. Shoot, Sa'd,' until when I had emptied my quiver, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shook out what was in his quiver and gave me a bright-feathered arrow." He said: "It was the one that had been feathered, and it was sharper than the others." Al-Zuhri said: "The arrows that Sa'd shot on that day were a thousand arrows."
