✧ I went on a military campaign with 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ to Syria. We halted at a place, and a dihqan (village chief) came seeking the Commander of the Faithful until he reached him. When the dihqan saw 'Umar ؓ, he prostrated. 'Umar ؓ said: 'What is this prostration?' He said: 'This is what we do to kings.' 'Umar ؓ said: 'Prostrate to your Lord who created you!' Then he said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, I have prepared food for you; come to me.' 'Umar ؓ said: 'Is there anything in your house of Persian images?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'We have no need of your house, but go and send us a type of food, and do not add anything to it.' He said: 'So the dihqan left and sent him the food, and he ate from it. Then 'Umar ؓ said to his servant: 'Is there any of that nabidh in your water-skin?' He said: 'Yes.' He brought it to him, and he poured it into a vessel, then smelled it and found its odor objectionable. He poured water over it three times, then drank, and said: 'If you find anything objectionable in your drink, do this with it.'
