✧ Three verses were revealed concerning wine. The first thing that was revealed was: 'They ask you about wine and gambling...' the verse. It was said: 'Has wine been forbidden?' They said: 'O Messenger of God, let us benefit from it as God, Mighty and Majestic, has said!' He ﷺ remained silent about them. Then this verse was revealed: 'Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated...' the verse. It was said: 'Has wine been forbidden?' They said: 'O Messenger of God, we do not drink it near prayer time,' and he ﷺ remained silent about them. Then it was revealed: 'O you who believe, indeed wine, gambling, sacrificing on stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Wine has been forbidden.' A skin of wine from Syria – or skins – was brought to a man, so the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar ؓ stood up.
