✧ The Ruling Concerning One Who Confesses to an Unspecified Prescribed Punishment

قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي نُسَيْرُ بْنُ ذُعْلُوقٍ، عَنْ خُلَيْدٍ قَالَ:

إِنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى عَلِيًّا ؓ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَصَبْتُ حَدًّا، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ: سَلُوهُ، مَا هُوَ ؟ فَلَمْ يُخْبِرْهُمْ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ: اضْرِبُوهُ حَتَّى يَنْهَاكُمْ

Translation

✧ A man came to ‘Ali ؓ and said: “I have committed an offense deserving a prescribed punishment.” ‘Ali ؓ said: “Ask him what it is.” But he did not inform them. So ‘Ali ؓ said: “Beat him until he tells you to stop.”
