✧ The Ruling on the Apostate

قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، ثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، قَالَ:

كَتَبَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ ؓ إِلَى عُمَرَ ؓ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَسْلَمَ ثُمَّ كَفَرَ، ثُمَّ أَسْلَمَ ثُمَّ كَفَرَ، بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مِرَارًا، أَيُقْبَلُ مِنْهُ الْإِسْلَامُ ؟ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ ؓ: اقْبَلْ مِنْهُمْ مَا قَبِلَ اللهُ مِنْهُمُ، اعْرِضْ عَلَيْهِ الْإِسْلَامَ، فَإِنْ قَبِلَ وَإِلَّا اضْرِبْ عُنُقَهُ

Translation

✧ 'Amr b. al-'As ؓ wrote to 'Umar ؓ asking him about a man who embraced Islam, then disbelieved, then embraced Islam, then disbelieved, after that several times. Should Islam be accepted from him? 'Umar ؓ wrote to him: 'Accept from them what Allah accepted from them. Offer him Islam; if he accepts, then leave him, otherwise strike his neck.'
