✧ When al-Ḥajjāj encamped against Ibn al-Zubayr ؓ, he seized a man and handed him over to Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar ؓ to execute him. Sālim said to him: 'Are you a Muslim?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Have you prayed the dawn prayer?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Go, I have no way against you.' What he did reached al-Ḥajjāj, who said to him: 'What did the man do?' He said: 'I asked him: Are you a Muslim? He said: Yes. I asked him: Have you prayed the dawn prayer? He said: Yes. My father told me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that: Whoever prays the dawn prayer is under the protection of Allah Almighty until morning or evening.' He said: 'He is one of the killers of ʿUthmān ؓ.' He said: 'I am not the avenger of ʿUthmān, so I will not kill his killers.' This reached his father ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar ؓ, who rushed out dragging his lower garment and met him about what he had done, and said: 'I named you Sālim so that you would be safe; I named you Sālim so that you would be safe.'
