✧ The Prescribed Punishment for Theft

وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ: حَدَّثَنَا أَشْهَلُ - هُوَ ابْنُ حَاتِمٍ - ثَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُدَيْرٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ:

إِنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ يَقُودُهُ وَقَدْ سَرَقَ بُرْدَةً، فَأَمَرَ بِهِ أَنْ تُقْطَعَ يَدُهُ، فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَا كُنْتُ أَدْرِي أَنْ يَبْلُغَ بُرْدَتِي مَا يُقْطَعُ فِيهِ يَدُ رَجُلٍ مُسْلِمٍ. قَالَ ﷺ: فَلَوْلَا كَانَ هَذَا قَبْلُ

Translation

✧ A man brought to the Prophet ﷺ another man, leading him, and he had stolen a cloak. He ordered that his hand be cut off. The man said: O Messenger of God, I did not know that my cloak would reach the value for which a Muslim man's hand is cut off. He ﷺ said: Would that this had been before.
