✧ Abu Bakrah ؓ used to have nabidh soaked for him in a jar. Abu Barzah ؓ arrived from an absence, and he stopped at Abu Bakrah's house before going to his own. He came upon a woman called Mayyah and asked her about Abu Bakrah ؓ and his condition. He looked and saw the jar containing the nabidh, and said: 'What is this jar?' She said: 'We soak nabidh for Abu Bakrah ؓ.' He said: 'I wish you would put it in a waterskin.' Then he left. The woman ordered the nabidh to be transferred to a waterskin, and hung it. Abu Bakrah ؓ came, and she told him about Abu Barzah ؓ and his arrival. Then he saw the waterskin and said: 'I will not drink from it. If you put honey in a jar, it would become forbidden to me, and if you put wine in a waterskin, it would become lawful to me...? We have known what we were forbidden: we were forbidden from the gourd, the hollowed stump, the green jar, and the pitch-coated vessel. As for the gourd, we, the people of Thaqif in al-Ta'if, used to take the gourd and cut into it bunches of grapes, then bury it, then leave it until it fermented and died. As for the hollowed stump, the people of al-Yamamah used to hollow out the base of a palm tree, and mash fresh and dry dates in it, then leave it until it fermented and died. As for the green jar, they were jars in which wine was brought to us. As for the pitch-coated vessel, these are the containers that have pitch in them.'
