✧ Julaybib was a man from the Ansar who used to enter upon women and converse with them. Abu Barzah said: I said to my wife, "Julaybib must never enter upon you." When one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ had an unmarried woman, he would not marry her off until he knew whether the Messenger of God ﷺ wanted her or not. One day the Messenger of God ﷺ said to a man from the Ansar, "O so-and-so, marry your daughter to me." He said, "Yes, with pleasure and delight." He said, "I do not want her for myself." He said, "For whom then?" He said, "For Julaybib." He said, "O Messenger of God, let me consult her mother." He went to her and said, "The Messenger of God ﷺ is proposing to your daughter." She said, "Yes, with pleasure and delight." He said, "He does not want her for himself." She said, "For whom does he want her?" He said, "For Julaybib." She said, "May she be shaven! For Julaybib? No, by the life of God, I will not marry Julaybib." When her father got up to go to the Prophet ﷺ, the girl said from behind her curtain to her mother, "Who proposed to me?" They said, "The Messenger of God ﷺ." She said, "Will you reject the command of the Messenger of God ﷺ? Give me to the Messenger of God ﷺ, for he will not waste me." Her father went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "She is yours to decide." So he married her to Julaybib. Hammad said: Ishaq b. 'Abd Allah b. Abi Talhah said, "Do you know what he supplicated for her?" He said, "What did he supplicate for her?" He said, "O God, pour good upon them abundantly and do not make their livelihood difficult." Thabit said: So he married her to him. While the Messenger of God ﷺ was on a campaign, he said, "Do you miss anyone?" They said, "No." He said, "But I miss Julaybib. Look for him among the slain." They found him beside seven whom he had killed, and then they killed him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "He killed seven and then they killed him? This man is from me and I am from him," saying it seven times. The Messenger of God ﷺ placed him on his forearms, for he had no bier except the forearms of the Messenger of God ﷺ, until he placed him in his grave.

Her wealth and beauty please him, so her guardian wants to marry her without dealing justly in her dower, giving her the like of what someone else would give her. Say: Allah gives you a ruling about them and what is recited to you in the Book concerning the orphan women to whom you do not give what is written for them and you desire to marry them}. She said, "And what Allah mentioned that is recited to you in the Book is the first verse in which He said: {If you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphans, then marry what is good to you from the women}." 'A'isha said, "And Allah said in the other verse about the desire of one of you for his orphan girl who is in his care when she has little wealth and beauty, so they were forbidden to marry those women whose wealth and beauty they desired except with justice, because of their desire for them."

When we were in lower Makkah or in its upper part, we met a young woman like a young she-camel. We said, 'Will you allow us to enjoy you?' She said, 'What will you give?' Each of us spread out his cloak. She began to look at the man. When the man saw her looking at me, he turned aside. He said, 'This one's cloak is worn out, and my cloak is new and fresh.' ✧ Regarding the two women among the Prophet's ﷺ wives to whom Allah said {If you two repent to Allah, your hearts have inclined}. This continued until he performed Hajj, and I performed Hajj with him. He turned aside, and I turned aside with him carrying a water-skin. He went to relieve himself, then came back, and I poured water over his hands from the water-skin, and he performed ablution. I said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, who are the two women among the Prophet's ﷺ wives to whom Allah said {If you two repent to Allah, your hearts have inclined}?' Umar said, 'How strange of you, O Ibn Abbas! They are Hafsah and Aishah.' Then Umar resumed his account and said: 'I and a neighbor of mine from the Ansar, in the Banu Umayyah b. Zayd, who lived in the upper part of Madinah, used to take turns going down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. One day he would go down, and one day I would go down. When I went down, I would bring him the news of that day from the revelation and other matters; and when he went down, he did the same. We, the people of Quraysh, used to dominate our women. But when we came to the Ansar, we found a people whom their women dominated. So our women began to adopt the ways of the Ansari women. My wife raised her voice at me and talked back to me, and I disapproved of her talking back to me. She said, "Why do you disapprove of me talking back to you? By Allah, the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ talk back to him, and one of them may shun him from day until night." That alarmed me, and I said, "Whoever among them does that will be in loss." Then I gathered my clothes and went down and entered upon Hafsah bt. Umar. I said to her, "O Hafsah, does one of you anger the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and shun him from day until night?" She said, "Yes." I said, "You have failed and lost. Do you feel secure that Allah will become angry for the anger of His Messenger ﷺ and you will perish? Do not ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for too much, do not talk back to him, do not shun him, and ask me for whatever you need. Do not be deluded because your neighbor is more radiant and more beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," meaning Aishah. Umar said: 'We had been told that Ghassan was shoeing horses to raid us. My Ansari companion went down on his day and returned to me in the evening. He knocked on my door violently, and I was alarmed and went out to him. He said, "A great matter has occurred." I said, "What is it? Has Ghassan come?" He said, "No, but something greater and more serious: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has divorced his wives." Umar said: I said, "Hafsah has failed and lost. I already thought this would happen soon." He said: So I gathered my clothes and prayed the dawn prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went into a small upper room of his and isolated himself there.

✧ When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ isolated himself from his wives, I entered the mosque and the people were striking pebbles and saying, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has divorced his wives.' That was before the women were commanded to observe hijab. Umar said: 'I will certainly know about it today.' So I entered upon Aishah and said, 'O daughter of Abu Bakr, has your matter reached the point that you offend Allah and His Messenger?' She said, 'What is it to you, O son of al-Khattab? Look after your own family.' Then I entered upon Hafsah bt. Umar and said to her, 'O Hafsah, has your matter reached the point that you offend Allah and His Messenger? I know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ does not love you, and were it not for me, he would have divorced you.' She wept bitterly. I said, 'Where is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said, 'He is in his storage room in the upper chamber.' So I went in, and there was Rabah, a servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sitting on the threshold of the upper chamber, dangling his legs on a wooden notch—a trunk that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to climb up and descend on. I called, 'O Rabah, ask permission for me to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He looked at the room, then looked at me, but said nothing. I said, 'O Rabah, ask permission for me to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for I think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ thought I came on behalf of Hafsah. By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands me to strike her neck, I will strike her neck.' I raised my voice, and he gestured to me with his hand. So I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was lying on a mat. He said: I sat down, and he had a waist-wrapper on, with nothing else, and the mat had left marks on his side. I looked around the storage room of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and saw a handful of barley, about a sa', and the like of it of qaraz in a corner of the room, and there was an untanned hide. Abu Hafs said: al-afiq is a hide whose hair has fallen off and has not been tanned. My eyes filled with tears, and he said, 'What makes you weep, O son of al-Khattab?' I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, why should I not weep? This mat has left marks on your side, and this is your storage room, and I see in it only what I see, while Caesar and Khosrau live amid fruits and rivers. You are the Messenger of Allah and His chosen one, and this is your storage room.' He said, 'O son of al-Khattab, are you not pleased that for us is the Hereafter and for them is this world?' I said, 'Yes.' I entered upon him and saw anger in his face. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what distresses you about the matter of women? If you have divorced them, then Allah and His angels, Jibril and Mikail, and I and Abu Bakr are with you. Seldom have I spoken—and I praise Allah—without hoping that Allah would confirm my words. And this verse, the verse of choice, was revealed: {Perhaps his Lord, if he divorces you, will give him in exchange wives better than you} and {If you two support one another against him, then Allah is his protector}—the verse. Aishah and Hafsah used to support one another against the rest of the Prophet's ﷺ wives. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, have you divorced them?' He said, 'No.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I go down and tell them that you have not divorced them?' He said, 'Yes, if you wish.' I kept talking to him until the anger left his face, and until he smiled and laughed. He had one of the most beautiful mouths of the people. Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ descended, and I descended, holding onto the trunk. He came down as though walking on the ground, without touching it with his hand. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you were in the room for twenty-nine days.' Then I stood at the door of the mosque and called out at the top of my voice: 'The Prophet ﷺ has not divorced his wives.' And this verse was revealed: {When there comes to them a matter of security or fear, they spread it abroad} up to {those among them who could investigate it would have known it}. I was the one who investigated that matter. And Allah revealed the verse of choice.

  162. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4189Sahih

✧ Do not strike the maidservants of Allah. He said: The women became defiant and their behavior toward their husbands worsened. Umar b. al-Khattab said: 'The women have become defiant and their behavior toward their husbands has worsened since you forbade striking them.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Then strike them.' So the people struck their wives that night. Many women came complaining of the beating. In the morning, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Seventy women went around the family of Muhammad last night, all complaining of beating. By Allah, you will not find those among the best of you.'

✧ 'You have a reward in having intercourse with your wife.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward even in satisfying desire?' He said: 'Yes. Do you think that if you had a son who reached maturity and then died, would you seek reward for him?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Did you create him?' He said: 'No, Allah created him.' He said: 'Did you guide him?' He said: 'No, Allah guided him.' He said: 'Did you provide for him?' He said: 'No, Allah provided for him.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Then place it in what is lawful for you and keep it away from what is forbidden, and keep it. If Allah wills, He will give it life, and if He wills, He will cause it to die, and you will have a reward.'

✧ "O Barirah, have you seen anything from 'A'ishah that makes you doubt her?" Barirah said: "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I have never seen a matter in her that I would conceal from her. Nothing is more [trivial] than that she is a young girl who sleeps away from the dough of her family, and a tame animal comes and eats it." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and sought to be excused from 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul. He said while on the pulpit: "O assembly of Muslims, who will excuse me from a man whose harm has reached my household? By Allah, I know nothing but good about my family. They have mentioned a man about whom I know nothing but good, and he never entered upon my family except with me." Sa'd b. Mu'adh al-Ansari stood and said: "I will excuse you from him, O Messenger of Allah. If he is from Aws, we will strike his neck; and if he is from Khazraj, command us and we will do your command." Then Sa'd b. 'Ubadah stood—he was the chief of Khazraj and a righteous man, but zeal overcame him—and said: "By Allah, you will not kill him, nor are you able to kill him." Usayd b. Hudayr, the cousin of Sa'd b. Mu'adh, stood and said: "You lie, by the life of Allah, we will surely kill him. You are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites." The two tribes, Aws and Khazraj, became agitated until they were about to fight, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept calming them until they fell silent. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then became silent. I wept all day; my tears did not cease and I could not sleep. My parents thought that weeping would split my liver. While they were sitting with me, a woman from the Ansar asked permission to enter upon me. I gave her permission and she sat with me. While we were in that state, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, greeted, and sat down. He had not sat with me since my affair began. He remained a month without receiving revelation. She said: He then testified and said: "Now then, O 'A'ishah, such and such has reached me about you. If you are innocent, Allah will soon acquit you. If you have fallen into sin, then seek Allah's forgiveness and repent, for when a servant confesses a sin and then repents, Allah turns to him." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his speech, my tears stopped until I didn't feel even a drop. I said to my father: "Answer the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my behalf." He said: "By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." I said to my mother: "Answer the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my behalf." She said: "By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." I said, while I was a young girl who did not read much of the Qur'an: "By Allah, I knew that you had heard this and it settled in your hearts and you believed it. If I say to you that I am innocent—and Allah knows I am innocent—you will not believe me. If I confess to you a matter—and Allah knows I am innocent—you will believe me. By Allah, I find for myself and you no example except as Abu Yusuf said: 'So patience is most fitting, and Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe' [12:18]." Then I turned and lay down on my bed. At that time, by Allah, I knew I was innocent and that Allah, Mighty and Exalted, would acquit me. But I did not think that Allah, Mighty and Exalted, would send down revelation concerning my affair that would be recited. My affair was too insignificant in my own eyes for Allah, Mighty and Exalted, to speak about me with a matter to be recited. But I hoped that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would see in his sleep a vision through which Allah would acquit me. She said: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not leave his seat, nor did anyone leave the house, until Allah sent down [revelation] upon His Prophet ﷺ. He was seized by the same severity that would seize him at the time of revelation, from the weight of the words revealed to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was relieved, the first words he spoke were: "O 'A'ishah, rejoice! By Allah, Allah has acquitted you." My mother said to me: "Get up and go to him." I said: "By Allah, I will not get up to him, and I praise none but Allah who sent down my acquittal." Then Allah sent down: "Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you" [24:11], the ten verses. She said: So Allah sent down these verses concerning my acquittal. Abu Bakr, ؓ, used to spend on Mistah because of his kinship and his poverty. He said: "By Allah, I will never spend on him again after what he said about 'A'ishah." Then Allah sent down: "And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives" [24:22], until His saying: "Would you not love that Allah should forgive you?" [24:22]. Abu Bakr said: "By Allah, I love that Allah should forgive me." He resumed spending on Mistah and said: "By Allah, I will never withhold it from him." She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had asked Zaynab bint Jahsh about my affair: "What do you know and what have you seen?" She said: "I protect my hearing and my sight. I know nothing but good." She said: She was the one among the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who vied with me, but Allah protected her through piety. Her sister Hamnah bint Jahsh began to fight on her behalf and was destroyed among those who were destroyed. Al-Zuhri said: "This is what has reached me of the matter of these people."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to divide his time among his wives and be fair, then say, "O Allah, this is my action in what I possess, so do not blame me for what I do not possess."

✧ While I and Ibn Mas'ud were walking in the city, Uthman ibn Affan met us and took Ibn Mas'ud's hand. So they both stood up and I stepped aside. When Abdullah saw that he had no need for me to accompany him, he said, "Come, O Alqamah." I then approached him while he was saying, "Should we not marry you, Abdullah, to a girl who may remind you of what you have missed?" Abdullah replied, "If you say that, then indeed we were young with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to us, 'Whoever is able to marry, let him marry, for it will help him lower his gaze and guard his chastity. And whoever is unable to marry, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him." And this is the Islamic castration.
