✧ Some people came to 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud and said, "We have come to ask you about a man among us who married but did not stipulate a dower, and Allah did not bring them together before he died." 'Abdullah said, "I have not been asked about anything since I parted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that is harder on me than this. Go to someone else." They kept coming to him for a month, then at the end they said to him, "Whom should we ask if we do not ask you? You are the most senior of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this region, and we find no one else." Ibn Mas'ud said, "I will speak about it according to the best of my opinion. If it is correct, it is from Allah; if it is wrong, it is from me, and Allah and His Messenger are free of it. I think she should be assigned a dower like that of her peers, without reduction or excess, she inherits, and she must observe the waiting period of four months and ten days." That was in the presence of some people from Ashja'. A man called Ma'qil b. Sinan al-Ashja'i stood up and said, "I bear witness that you have ruled exactly as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled in the case of a woman of ours called Birwa' bt. Washiq." 'Abdullah was never seen to rejoice at anything after Islam as he rejoiced at this story.
