✧ Hafsa bt. Umar was widowed from Khunays b. Hudhafa al-Sahmi, a man among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ who had witnessed Badr and died in Madinah. Umar said: I met Uthman b. Affan and offered Hafsa to him, saying, "If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa bt. Umar." He said, "I will consider that." He said: I waited some nights, and he met me and said, "I do not want to marry this day of mine." Umar said: I met Abu Bakr and said, "If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa bt. Umar." He said: He did not give me any reply, and I was more upset with him than with Uthman. I waited some nights, and then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her to me, and I married her to him. Abu Bakr met me and said, "Perhaps you felt something in yourself when you offered Hafsa to me and I did not give you any reply." He said: I said, "Yes." He said: "Nothing prevented me from giving you any reply when you offered her to me except that I had heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention her, and I would not divulge the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Had he left her, I would have married her."
