16. Breast Feeding
✧ The Prophet ﷺ commanded Sahlah, the wife of Abu Hudhayfah, to breastfeed Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, so that Abu Hudhayfah's jealousy would go away. She breastfed him while he was a man. Rabi'ah said: "That was a concession for Salim."
✧ Sahlah bint Suhayl came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Salim is called [the son] of Abu Hudhayfah and he stays with him and enters upon me and sees me in a state of undress, while we are in a cramped house. And Allah has said: 'Call them by their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah' [33:5]." He ﷺ said: "Breastfeed him, and you will become forbidden to him."
✧ Abu Hudhayfah b. 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah was one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and had witnessed Badr. He had adopted Salim, who was called Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had adopted Zayd b. Harithah. Abu Hudhayfah married Salim—considering him his son—to his brother's daughter, Fatimah bint al-Walid b. 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah, who at that time was among the first of the emigrant women, and she was the best of the widowed women of Quraysh. When Allah sent down regarding Zayd b. Harithah what He sent down, He said: "Call them by their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and your freed slaves" [33:5], each one who had been adopted was traced back to his father, and if his father was not known, he was traced back to his mawla. Then Sahlah bint Suhayl, the wife of Abu Hudhayfah, from Banu 'Amir b. Lu'ayy, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to regard Salim as a son. He used to enter upon me, and we have only one house. What do you think about his affair?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Breastfeed him with five sucklings, and he will become forbidden by your milk."
✧ I married Umm Yahya bint Abi Ihab. A black woman came to us and claimed that she had breastfed us all. I went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: "How can you stay with her when she has said what she said? Leave her."
✧ He married the daughter of Abu Ihab. A black woman claimed that she had breastfed both of them. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, but he turned away from me. I came to him from the other side and said: "O Messenger of Allah, she is lying." He said: "How can you stay with her when she has claimed that she breastfed both of you?" So he forbade him from her.
✧ He said, "I breastfed Uqbah, who married me, and Uqbah said to me, 'I don't know that you breastfed me and didn't inform me.' So he sent a message to the family of Abi Ihab and asked them, and they said, 'We don't know that she breastfed our companion.' Uqbah then rode to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Medina and asked him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'How is it possible when it has already been mentioned?' So Uqbah left her and married someone else."

It was only the wife of Abū Quʿays who suckled me; Abū Quʿays did not suckle me. He ﷺ said: "Permit him, for he is your paternal uncle."

✧ On the authority of Raytah, the wife of 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud and mother of his child, who was a skilled craftswoman. 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud had no wealth, and she used to spend on him and his child from the proceeds of her craft. She said: By Allah, you and your child have preoccupied me from charity, so I am not able to give charity along with you. He said: I would not like you to do it if there is no reward for you in that. So he and she asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman with a craft from which I sell, and I have nothing, nor does my husband, nor does my child, and they preoccupied me, so I do not give charity. Do I have any reward in spending on them? He said: "You have a reward in that for what you spend on them, so spend on them."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and said: "O assembly of women, give charity even from your jewelry, for you will be the majority of the inhabitants of Hell on the Day of Resurrection." She said: 'Abd Allah was a man of light means, so she said: Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for me whether spending on my husband and orphans in my care would suffice me as charity. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been invested with awe, so he said: No, you ask him yourself. She said: So I went, and at the door was a woman from the Ansar whose need was the same as mine, her name was Zaynab. She said: Bilal came out to us, so I said to him: Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for us whether spending on our husbands and orphans in our care would suffice us as charity. She said: Bilal entered and said: O Messenger of Allah, at the door are Zaynab—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Which Zaynab?" He said: Zaynab the wife of 'Abd Allah, and Zaynab a woman from the Ansar, both asking about spending on their husbands and orphans in their care, whether that would suffice them as charity. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Yes, they have two rewards: the reward of kinship and the reward of charity."

✧ I fell ill in Makkah in the year of the conquest with an illness that brought me close to death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited me, so I said to him: O Messenger of Allah, I have abundant wealth and no one inherits from me except my daughter. Shall I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth? He said: "No." I said: Half? He said: "No." I said: A third? He said: "A third, and a third is much. If you leave your heirs wealthy, it is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. You will never spend an expenditure seeking thereby the face of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you raise to your wife's mouth." I said: O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my emigration? He said: "You will not be left behind after me and then do a deed seeking thereby the face of Allah except that you will increase in elevation and degree. Perhaps you will be left behind after me until some people benefit by you and others are harmed by you. O Allah, carry out for my companions their emigration and do not turn them back on their heels. But the unfortunate one is Sa'd b. Khawlah—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him because he died in Makkah."

✧ That Abu 'Amr b. Hafs divorced her three times and sent her maintenance, but she deemed it insufficient. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him toward Yemen. Khalid b. al-Walid went with a group from Banu Makhzum to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in the house of Maymunah and said: O Messenger of Allah, Abu 'Amr b. Hafs has divorced Fatimah three times, so does she have any maintenance? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "She has no maintenance and no housing." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to her that she should move to Umm Sharik. Then he sent to her that Umm Sharik is visited by the early emigrants, so move to the house of Ibn Umm Maktum, for if you remove your headcover he will not see you. And he sent to her: Do not precede me with yourself. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her to Usamah b. Zayd.

She said: Suitors proposed to me, among them Mu'awiyah and Abu Jahm.
