✧ Sa'd saw a son of his praying and supplicating, saying: I ask You for Paradise, and for its fruits, its delights, and its spouses, and the like of that, and he went on at length, and I seek refuge with You from the Fire, and from its chains, its shackles, and its blaze, and the like of that, while Sa'd was listening. When he finished his prayer, Sa'd said to him: You have asked for prolonged bliss and sought refuge from prolonged evil. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: There will be people who transgress in supplication. And Sa'd recited: Call upon your Lord humbly and secretly; indeed, He does not like the transgressors. He said: I do not know whether he raised it to the Prophet ﷺ or whether it is Sa'd's own statement: It is sufficient for you to say: I ask You for Paradise and whatever word or deed brings one near to it, and I seek refuge with You from the Fire and whatever word or deed brings one near to it.

As for 'Abdullah ibn Khatal, he was caught while clinging to the curtains of the Ka'bah, and Sa'id ibn Hurayth and 'Ammar ibn Yasir raced to him; Sa'id beat 'Ammar—and he was the younger of the two men—and killed him. He raised his head and looked at him three times, each time refusing, then he accepted his pledge after the third. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: "I consider this objectionable; I think he knows about women's affairs." He used to visit Sawdah, so he forbade him from visiting her. ✧ Verses of the Qur'an were revealed concerning him. He said: The mother of Sa'd swore that she would never speak to him again until he disbelieved in his religion, and that she would not eat or drink. She said: You claim that Allah has enjoined upon you to honor your parents, and I am your mother, and I command you to do this. He said: She remained for three days until she fainted from exhaustion. Then a son of hers called 'Umara got up and gave her water, and she began to pray against Sa'd. Then Allah revealed this verse: 'And We have enjoined upon man goodness toward his parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you used to do.' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ obtained a great amount of booty, and in it was a sword. I took it and brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Give me this sword as a gift, for I am one whom you know. He said: 'Return it to where you took it from.' I went back with it, then I returned after that and spoke to him again, and he said: 'Return it to where you took it from.' I went away until, when I wanted to throw it into the pile of spoils, my soul reproached me, so I returned to him and said: Give it to me. He said: He raised his voice at me and said: 'Return it to where you took it from.' Then Allah revealed: 'They ask you about the spoils of war.' I sent for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he came to me. I said: Allow me to divide my wealth wherever I wish. He refused. I said: Then half. He refused. I said: Then a third. He remained silent. So a third was considered permissible. He said: I came upon a group of the Ansar and the Muhajirun, and they said: Come, we will feed you and give you wine to drink - and that was before wine was forbidden. I went to them in a hush - and hush means a garden - and there was a roasted camel's head with them, and a skin of wine. He said: I ate and drank with them. He said: Then I mentioned the Ansar and the Muhajirun and said: The Muhajirun are better than the Ansar. He said: A man took the jawbone of the head and struck me with it, wounding my nose. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. Then Allah revealed concerning me - meaning himself - the matter of wine: 'Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous sacrifices, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan.'

He said: "No." I said: Then half of it? He said: "No." Then he said: "A third, and a third is large—or much. Indeed, that you leave your heirs wealthy is better for you than leaving them needy, begging from people. And you will never spend any expenditure seeking thereby the face of God except that you will be rewarded for it, even what you place in your wife's mouth." He said: O Messenger of God, will I be left behind after my companions? He said: "You will not be left behind and then do a righteous deed seeking thereby the face of God except that you will increase thereby in rank and elevation. And perhaps you will be left behind until some people benefit through you and others are harmed through you. O God, complete for my companions their emigration and do not turn them back on their heels. But the wretched one is Sa'd b. Khawla."
